Photographic exhibit on

L
A GRANDE — An art show
featuring photographs by
John F. Marshall is now open in
the Co-Op Gallery at Art Center
East, 1006 Penn Ave.
The exhibit, titled “Fire Sto-
ries,” will be on display through
Oct. 23. A digital artist talk and
virtual exhibit tour is available at
www.artcentereast.org.
“Fire Stories” looks back in
time through pairings of pan-
oramic images taken from for-
est fi re lookouts — comparing
those of today to ones from the
mid-1930s. Marshall was assist-
ed in telling the story by Dr. Paul
Hessburg, U.S. Forest Service
research scientist and Univer-
sity of Washington professor.
Narrated photographs take the
viewer through the maze of his-
tory, fi re ecology, fi re behavior
and land management.
“Someone needed to put fi re
into perspective over long time
frames. I have had an oppor-
tunity to do just that,” Marshall
said.
Marshall, who has a M.S.
in wildlife resources from the
University of Idaho, started
taking photographs of razed
landscapes on the Okanaogan-
Wenatchee National Forest
in 1994. He has replicated
historic panoramas at more
than 75 fi re lookout sites in
Oregon and Washington, a
sample of which are shown in
this exhibit alongside classic
nature photography.
Find out more about this
event and others at www.artcen-
tereast.org. Regular gallery hours
are Wednesday through Friday
from noon-5 p.m. and Saturday
from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Exhibits can
also be viewed virtually on ACE’s
website. Gallery admission and
receptions are always free, open
to the public and family-friendly.
