Grant Union’s boys and girls teams had
a good showing at their the fi rst home track
meet in two years amid the pandemic.
Grant Union, Powder Valley, Crane and
Joseph competed May 7, and Grant Union’s
boys and girls came out on top.
“Last year, we literally started track sea-
son and then closed down before we had a
single event or competition,” Grant Union
track and fi eld head coach Sonna Smith
said. “It felt good to have the meet and I
know parents were happy to be outside and
support.”
Smith said she thought the team did well
at the meet during this short season. She
said it was also the fi rst meet ever for some
of the students.
In the fi eld event, she said the team had a
good showing in javelin and jumps for both
boys and girls.
Senior Jordan Hall placed fi rst in the jav-
elin event as he threw a personal best that
marked 152-07. Sophomore Eli Wright
placed second with a throw of 139-04, and
junior Justin Hodge placed fourth with
130-00.
For girls javelin, Grant Union junior
Katelyn Hughes placed third with a throw of
89-11. Junior Carson Weaver placed fourth
with 85-02. Senior Brooke Allen from Pow-
der Valley took fi rst with a mark of 104-10.
Hall placed fi rst in long jump with a new
personal best of 19-05. Hodge placed third
with 18-08.
Senior Abby Lusco placed fi rst in discus
with a mark of 100-04.
Sophomore Tucker Carpenter placed
second in both discus and shot put during
the second meet of his high school career. In
discuss, he threw a personal best of 97-09.
Sophomore Max Bailey placed second in
pole vault with 7-00, and senior Jesse Rand-
leas placed third with a personal record of
6-06. Freshman Macy Carter placed second
in the girls pole vaulting event with 5-06.
Freshman Aliciana Archibald placed third
with 4-00.
Weaver placed fi rst in high jump with
junior Lauryn Pettyjohn taking second.
Freshman Drake Euting took second in the
boys high jump event with 5-06.
Hall placed fi rst in the 110 meter hurdles
with 18.07. Hodge placed fi rst in the 100
meter with 11.9.
The Grant Union/Praire City softball team has
won three of their last four games.
The Lady Pros picked up a pair of wins May 5
when they swept Union/Cove, winning the fi rst game
2-0 and the second 3-1.
Grant Union softball head coach Zach Williams
said the team played the best softball of the season in
those games. He said that included pitching, defense
and off ense.
He told the Eagle that Union’s pitcher in both games
was “tough,” but the Lady Pros stayed patient and
made adjustments at the plate. He said the team took
early leads in both games to sweep the doubleheader.
Williams said a home run by Riley Robertson and
a solid outing by Drewsey Williams on the mound
locked up the fi rst game. After that, Halle Parsons
pitched a gem in game two and kept Union hitters from
making solid contact to lock up the second game.
Grant Union split wins with Echo Friday, losing
the fi rst game 7-6 and winning the second 11-3. Coach
Williams said the Lady Pros gave up six unearned
over seven innings. He said the team did not play well
defensively, which cost the team the game.
He said Drewsey Williams threw well from the
mound in game one, considering the strike zone diff er-
ent from before. He said she made adjustments and did
enough to keep Grant Union in the game, but the team
came up short.
The Lady Pros bounced back quickly in game two
and played solid defense. Parsons pitched well in game
two, coach Williams said, and kept the ball down to
get big outs.
Grant Union is 3-1 in league play and 7-2 overall
as they begin the fi nal week of their shortened season.
Williams said the Lady Pros have what it takes to
get into the playoff s. The talent is there, he said.
“We have the pitching and defensive/off ensive per-
sonnel to get into the playoff s,” Williams said. “But we
have to show up on game day ready to play.”
Williams said the team needs to be the right mix of
relaxed and focused when they take the fi eld.
“We talk a lot about being focused on every pitch,
every inning, all game long, and making sure we exe-
cute,” he said.

at districts.
“I would like to thank all of our helpers
at the meet and the other coaches here and

said. “Overall, I would just like to thank
