What are cataracts?
One of top causes of age-related vision loss is treatable

As an optometrist, patients
often express to me one of their
greatest fears in life is to go
blind. Fortunately for most of
us, legal blindness will not hap-
pen in our life time. However,
the majority of us will expe-
rience some decreased visual
performance due to aging.
As we age into the decade of
the 60s and beyond, we will
develop the eye condition
called cataracts. In my experi-
ence, cataracts are one of the
top two causes of vision loss
related to aging.
What exactly is a
cataract?
The human eye is born with
a natural lens, positioned inside
and directly behind the iris (the
structure that we use to clas-
sify eyes being blue or brown). A healthy eye on the left and an eye with cataracts on the right.
A cataract is a condition where

most patients have an obvious
improvement in vision clarity.
Many patients even report it the
same day of surgery.
In Grant County, Blue
Mountain Hospital contracts
with a cataract surgeon to visit
periodically and perform cata-
ract surgery. Patients are then
able to stay close to home, as
they can have surgery at the
hospital and all pre-op and
post-op visits in John Day.
