Harvest festival
kicks off fall season
By Steven Mitchell
Blue Mountain Eagle
Grant County kicked off
the fall season at the Grant
County Fairgrounds Heritage
Barn with the Friday Street
Fair and Saturday’s John
Day Farmers Market Harvest
Festival.
Emergency services offi-
cers grilled up free hamburg-
ers for roughly 175 hungry
attendees Friday. Meanwhile,
the “Grant County Jammers”
played old-time bluegrass
while kids in costumes filled
up on candy, decorated pump-
kins and played cornhole.
Patty McAndrew of Har-
rison Ranch Produce, a reg-
ular vendor at the John Day
Farmers Market, said Friday
that the Street Fair was busier
than expected.
McAndrew,
otherwise
known as “farmer Scott’s
cousin,” said this was her
second season working at
the ranch. She said she grew
up in Oregon, but the mil-
itary took her to Florida,
where she has been since.
“I love country life,”
she said. “I am friends with
the cows, and I spoil the
animals.”
Organizer
Stephanie
LeQueiu said Saturday that
she could not think of a better
place to hold a fall festival.
“The purpose of the fair-
grounds is the community,”
she said.
LeQueiu said people in the
community “stepped up” and
made sure kids could enjoy
Halloween.
She said Rob Raschio and
Country Preferred Realty
donated money so kids could
decorate pumpkins.
“People were compelled to
make sure the kids had fun,”
she said.
LeQueiu said Friday
brought out a younger crowd
and a different vibe. She said
it was interesting to get to
see other snapshots of the
community.
“As COVID-19 changes,
communities are continuing to
adapt,” she said.
David O. Tripp
James Willy Ennis
Dec. 9, 1943 – Oct. 5, 2020
Dave Tripp, 76, of Mt. Vernon, Oregon, passed away
on Oct. 5, 2020, at Blue Mountain Hospital with his
family by his side. The family will have a celebration
of life in the spring of 2021 per
Dave’s wishes.
Dave was born in John Day,
Oregon, on Dec. 9, 1943. His early
years were spent wrangling cattle
and chasing/breaking wild horses
as a ranch hand. Dave met his
wife JoAnn Overton in 1965 and
gladly hung up his spurs for a bet-
ter-paying job as a saw filer for
his ultimate goal in life was to be
a husband and a father. They were
married on April 9, 1966, and have been married for 54
years. They welcomed two sons, Joe and Earl.
Dave was an uncanny shot with both a shotgun and
a rifle, taking game with a single shot and winning trap
tournaments throughout the northwest. We thank him for
all the time spent passing these skills onto the next gen-
erations. His get-your-hands-dirty approach to teaching
that was lovingly backed with captivating stories, some-
times as long as the fishing expeditions, he enjoyed so
much. His greatest teacher in life would be living life
itself — this was shared and learned with his many
childhood friends.
Dave will be missed but always remembered by his
wife, JoAnn Tripp; sons, Joe (Valicity) Tripp and Earl
(Kellie) Tripp; sisters, Rhonda and Roberta; grandchil-
dren, Garret, Devan, Aurora and Rhett; as well as the
countless other family and friends he shared his life
with.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Blue
Mountain Hospice through Driskill Memorial Chapel,
241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.

1932 – 2020
James Willy Ennis was born in 1932 and died Oct. 13 peace-
fully in his sleep and went to be with the Lord.
Retiring at age 86 as a full-time ranch hand, he only gave
it up after a bad tractor wreck in 2018.
An orphan since age 6, he lived with
nine different families and went to high
school in Brownsville with his four
cousins, who were a logging family.
He married Janet, and they had four
children, Jim, Jeff and Jennita, all of
Madras, and a daughter Joyce of Bea-
ver Creek.
In 1970, he married Mya, and they
stayed and worked together for 50 years
on various Eastern Oregon ranches,
since 1983. Well known for his hard work and horse training,
he enjoyed hunting deer and elk on the ranch or with his kids.
He had grandchildren and 14 great-grandkids who enjoyed his
story telling sessions of many adventures he’d encountered.
A funeral service will be held at Living Word Christian
Center on Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. where he and his wife attended
for over 25 years.

The quote should have read “keeping our principal balance.”
Claris
Fraley
February 12, 1931 ~ October 5, 2020
Thank You
Claris J. (Campbell) Fraley was born February 12, 1931 in The Dalles, Oregon, to Eldon and Rachel (Look) Fraley, and
passed away in The Dalles on October 5, 2020, at age 89. She attended schools in The Dalles and Gresham graduating
in 1948. Claris had many fond memories of spending time with her grandparents, Clarence and Della Look, who farmed
around The Dalles area. The oldest of three siblings, she was always there for her younger sister and brother.
Another successful Rally for the Cure
because of all the generosity:
After high school, she attended one year of nursing school. It was while working at The Dalles Hospital that she met
her future husband, Tom Campbell, a rancher from Eastern Oregon. They were married in Portland on September 11,
1949 and a new chapter in her life began when they moved first to Pendleton where she worked as a legal secretary,
then to a sheep ranch near Kimberly, Oregon where five children were born and raised.

Claris’ talent as a singer was soon discovered and she sang at many weddings, funerals and other functions over the years. She loved her flowers and
garden, canning or freezing her produce, as well as processing every variety of fruit picked at Kimberly Orchards. Her pickles, jams and fruits were second
to none! Claris was an outstanding cook. She made everyone welcome in her home and always made sure no one left hungry! She was an accomplished
seamstress and knitted or crocheted a lot of slippers, caps, sweaters and other items that were mostly given as gifts. She volunteered at many community
events and served as an EMT for a time. Claris was always ready and willing to help anyone in need. She especially loved sharing her musical talents
with children. Although not an avid sports fan, she supported all her children’s’ events, from ball games, track meets, and rodeo, to plays & holiday
programs, and 4-H.
Later Claris and Tom divorced, and she first moved to Cannon Beach, then to Portland, Boring, and finally to Flagstone Assisted Living in The Dalles.
During this time, she pursued her passions of music, singing, poetry, theater and writing, as well as volunteering at her church. She was a woman of faith
who made many life-long friends who shared her passions.
Rally Committee:
Claris is survived by her children: Kevin (Sue Montgomery) Campbell of Portland, OR, Tom (Jane) Campbell of Lonerock, OR, Lisa (Roger) Chambers of
Pasco, WA, Brian (Cheryl) Campbell, of Imbler, OR, and John (Kelli) Campbell of Stanfield, OR; sister Dee (Jerry) Sloan of Richland, WA, and brother Clair
(Pat) Fancher of Murrells Inlet, SC. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded
in death by her parents, Eldon and Rachel, stepfather, Newell Fancher, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
