Fleet-footed cow dogs were the
stars Aug. 14 during the Dog Trials
at the Grant County Fair.
Eight handlers, many ranchers
and ranch hand cowboys, directed
their dogs as they whizzed across
the Outdoor Arena at Grant County
Fairgrounds through various obsta-
cles and into a pen to herd cattle in a
timed, competitive event after Team
Branding.
Chad Finley of Mt. Vernon and
his dog Barrett took the top prize,
while Katie Starr and her dog Lucy
took second and M.T. Anderson and
his dog Whiskey took third place.

The other competitors and their
dogs included: Kyler Beard with
Fringy, Clint Weaver with Rose,
Jack Field with Ted and Alec Oliv-
ier with Alice.
The competitors and their well-
trained dogs used a start-and-stop
whistle with mostly border collies.
This year’s ranch rodeo, mod-
ified and socially distanced, was
dubbed a ranch rodeo, in that many
of the events were day-to-day ranch
tasks.
The event drew competitors from
around the area.

Over a dozen ranch
hand cowboys and ranch-
ers gathered together at
the Grant County Fair
Aug. 15 to compete for
the top spot in team
branding.
Unlike most profes-
sional cowboy rodeo
events, team branding is
a competition of day-to-
day activities at a work-
ing ranch.
In the event, each team
must rope four head of
cattle with their desig-
nated team number on
them in under 10 minutes
while all un-roped cattle
stays on the other end of
the arena.
Jake Taylor, whose
team took first place, said
this is an event from years
past. He said there has
been a longtime friendly
rivalry between Grant and
Harney counties.
“It’s a lot of fun”,
he said of team brand-
ing. “We were just grate-
ful people were able to
bring the cattle out for the
event.”
Taylor said ranchers
came from as far as Har-
ney County and beyond.
Ten teams of four
competed.
