Temperatures in John Day
averaged slightly colder than
normal during November,
according to preliminary data
received by NOAA’s National
Weather Service in Pendleton.
The average temperature
was 37.7 degrees, which was
1.2 degrees below normal. High
temperatures averaged 51.4
degrees, which was 1.7 degrees
above normal. The highest was
68 degrees on Nov. 9. Low
temperatures averaged 23.9
degrees, which was 4.2 degrees
below normal. The lowest was 4
degrees, on Nov. 30.
There were 30 days with
the low temperature below 32
degrees. There were two days
when the high temperature
stayed below 32 degrees.
Precipitation totaled 0.17

The outlook for Decem-
ber from NOAA’s Climate
Prediction Center calls for
above-normal
temperatures
and above-normal precipita-
tion. Normal highs for John
Day fall from 44 degrees at the
start of December to 41 degrees
at the end of December. Normal
lows fall from 24 degrees to 22
degrees. The 30-year normal
precipitation is 1.24 inches.

Roberta Bennett
Carolyn Elliott, loving wife, wonderful mother and
best friend to many, passed unexpectedly following
surgery on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019.
She loved all things spar-
kly and blingy, and the world is
now a lot dimmer.
She was preceded in death
by her parents Alvin and Marie
Lyman, sister Margaret Schatz
and her loved spouse of over 50
years, Tom.
She is survived by her chil-
dren Tammy (Chris), Tom
(Mary), Jeff (Kelly), brother
Earl (Vicky), sister Marilyn,
beloved niece Tina, 10 grandchildren Amber, Cindy,
Brandon, Shawn, Brianne, Ashley, Loryn, Jason, Tan-
ner and Kaylee, 18 great-grandchildren and many
beloved nieces and nephews.
In accordance with her wishes she was cremated. No
service will be held. A blingy remembrance of life will
take place in the spring. Further information to come.
Roberta Bennett of Kelso, Washington, passed away at
her home on Nov. 26, 2019.
Roberta was one of five children
born to Edwin Rieger Sr. and Mary
Lulay Rieger on April 18, 1931.
Roberta was born one minute before
her twin Robert Rieger.
Roberta attended Shelburn grade
school and Stayton High School and
later in life earned her GED.
Roberta married her high school
sweetheart Paul Bennett on July 9,
1947.
Roberta loved to dote on her fam-
ily and she liked to cook, read, paint, garden and sew. She
was a volunteer for 10 years as an EMT for the Long Creek
Ambulance, and she also volunteered at the Long Creek
school teaching water color, drawing, charcoal and acrylic
painting. Roberta worked as a bookkeeper for Elmer Ben-
nett Trucking. She also took care of many ill residents of
Long Creek. After 40 years in Long Creek and unable to care
for the big house and the need for more medical care, they
moved to Dayton, Oregon, then later to Kelso, Washington.
Roberta is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ben-
nett, and her twin brother, Robert Rieger.
Survivors include her brother Edwin (Sadie) Rieger of
Roseburg, Oregon, Joyce Finegan of Dallas, Oregon, Joan
Bethel of Turner, Oregon; her children Jack (Judy) Bennett
of Dayton, Oregon, Gail (Larry) Mennenga of Carlton, Ore-
gon, Elmer (Jan) Bennett of La Grande, Oregon, and Dixie
(Craig) Shartner of Vancouver, Washington; 13 grandchil-
dren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grand-
child; and a special friend Ruth Smith of Dale, Oregon.
Graveside services will be held in the late spring to early
summer at Long Creek, Oregon.

Planning commission seeks members

The city of John Day is look-
ing for two more Planning Com-
mission members to serve four-
year terms. The terms will start in
January 2020, and it is required
that an applicant is a resident
and inhabitant of John Day. The
application also reminds appli-
cants that members of the Plan-
ning Commission “are required
to file an annual Statement of
Economic Interest with the State
of Oregon.”
The job of the Planning Com-
mission is to review changes and
revisions regarding the city’s
development code, according to
Chantal DesJardin, the secretary
and cashier for the city.
Such projects like the land
partition and site design review
for the future hotel will be con-
sidered by the Planning Com-
mission. Applications are avail-
able from the city or on the
city’s Facebook page. Return the
paperwork to city hall by the end
of the year to be considered.

Carole Lee Ashby
Carole passed away peacefully in her sleep December 10, 2019 at the Blue Mtn Care Center in Prairie City,
Oregon.  Carole will be laid to rest with her husband at Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland, Oregon in the spring of
2020 (date and time to be announced.)
Carole was born on August 13, 1933 to Ernest (Pat) Moore and Alma Irene Brooking in The Dalles, Oregon at
the family home. She was the third daughter and sibling to three sisters and three brothers. She attended grade school
and high school in Richland, Oregon; graduating from Eagle Valley High in 1950.  After graduation, Carole moved to
Portland where she was employed as a telephone operator for NW Telephone and Telegraph.
Carole married Wilbur Tracey Ashby August 8, 1953 at the home of Judge Lloyd Rae in Baker City, Oregon.
Together they raised four children. Carole worked in various businesses while in Baker County.  She was employed
at Baker Grocery and Albertsons.  While working at Albertsons, she was fortunate to wait on and receive autographs
from Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and other actors for the movie Paint Your Wagon.
Carole became employed at the First National Bank in Baker and then transferred to the branch in John Day upon relocating to Grant County
in 1975. Upon retirement, Carole had been employed at Quisenberry’s (Troutman’s) for the previous six years.
She was baptized and became a member of St Francis Catholic Church in Baker City in 1961. Later, after relocating to John Day, she
transferred her membership to St Elizabeth Catholic Church.  She was an active member of the Ladies of Saint Elizabeth; enjoying helping with
their activities by providing hand crocheted items and home baked goods for the annual bazaars and spaghetti feeds.
Carole loved being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing, (obtaining her first fishing license at the
age of 40), cooking, huckleberry picking; shopping for new clothes, knitting and crocheting.  She loved to bake and was always trying out new
recipes that she would find that looked interesting.  She continued to knit and crochet until her hands became so stiff she couldn’t hold the needles
any longer. She always had a garden around her, and enjoyed watching her plants grow and bloom, she also loved receiving letters in the mail and
visiting with friends on the front porch of her home.   
Carole is survived by her 4 children; Blaiden (the late Tommie Rose) from McDermitt, NV; Trace (Duane) Andrew; Adele (Cody) Wilson,
both of Canyon City, OR; and W. Kevin of Aumsville, OR; 14 grandchildren (Rebecca, Kristen, Mary, Brant, Joseph, Adena, Alexandra and
Andrea – Riann, Lucas,– Cala, Michael, Mitch and Malachi); 28 great grandchildren (Isabel, Jacob; Chase J, Cailee & Tanler; Silas; Ian, Asher
& Avery; Chase; Jared & Tehya; Jace, Trenton, Trey, Axel, Adelaide and Easton; Elliott, Aiden, Jacob Wilbur & Paisley; Rowdy & Addison, Ezra
& Erelah; Hideki & Yuuki; Aria Rose, Harper & Hudson); sisters, Monirah (Patricia) of Portland, OR and Judith (Clark) Crawley of Bend, OR;
half-brother Tom (Donna) Moore of Canada;  Nieces Diana, Rhonda, Jo and Betty, Nicole & Karen; Nephews Dean, Dee, Damon & David.
She was preceded in death in 2017 by her husband of 64 years, Wilbur T Ashby, her Father and Mother; sister Milly Mae; brothers Paul and
Jerry; daughter-in-law Tommie Rose; nephew Roland and great grandson Elijah.
