On Friday, Prospector Hailie Wright led her team with 18 points followed by Madi McKrola with 17. Prospector Kaylee Wright, a starter, was out for the game with an ankle injury. Hailie hit a 3-point shot to start. Then Stanfi eld moved ahead early in the fi rst quarter. Grant Union caught up and held a slim lead, 12-11, going into the second and stayed ahead. Wright rebounded and put up a shot at the halftime buzzer. The Prospectors out- scored the Tigers 15-8 in the second for the 27-19 lead. McKrola scored 9 points in the third quarter, includ- ing 1-1 at the free-throw line. Wright hit her second 3-pointer for the night along with a 2-point shot, and Baylee Combs and Alcie Moore each added 2. “We focused on our defensive game allowing us to shut down the primary scorers for both teams,” said Grant Union head coach Kristi Moore, adding that rebounding was key in both games. “On Saturday, we were The Eagle/Richard Hanners Grant Union senior Madi McKrola drives against Stanfi eld on Jan. 18. able to work into the posts allowing our post players to take advantage of the one- on-one game,” she said. “The team set a goal to win our league, and they are working every day to accomplish the goal.” Grant Union is leading in the Blue Mountain Con- ference with a 7-0 record, followed by the Enterprise Outlaws (5-2) in second and the Heppner Mustangs (5-2) in third. CrossFit team wins in Nampa, Idaho By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle Three Grant County women joined forces to win fi rst place in their division at the Jan. 12 Granite Games CrossFit competition in Nampa, Idaho. As the team “PVC Prodi- gies,” Rebekah Rand of Can- yon City and Megan Sher- man and Haley Olson, both of John Day, took the top spot on the podium at the Snake River CrossFit gym in the women’s scaled division, beating 18 other teams. “It felt amazing to win, and teaming up with those two, we had really good teamwork,” Rand said. “Our strengths and weaknesses complement each other.” Sherman, who owns the Canyon Creek Cross Train- ing gym in John Day, which is not affi liated with CrossFit, said they discovered it was also a global event, and they placed 38th out of 527 teams. The competition workouts included ring rows, jump rope, burpees and partner deadlift. Sherman said the partner deadlift was the most chal- lenging for their team due to their height differences. One partner takes one side of the bar, and the other is on the opposite side, dead lifting 205 pounds. “I’m 5-foot-2, and Haley is 5-foot-10,” Sherman said. We had to be in sync.” Olson said their team trained hard for the event for three months together. “It was awesome being on a team with those guys,” she said. Rand said it was a fun experience. “We didn’t go expecting to win, but it was good to see where we stacked up against the other teams,” she said. “It felt good to come out on top.” The three continue to train for future events. Sherman is working toward having her gym USA Weightlifting certifi ed, so athletes can train in her gym for those events and the gym can be entered into high-level powerlifting competitions. She said 40-50 members train at her gym, and many like to compete or watch competitions. The Grant Union Pros- pector boys and Stanfi eld Tigers kept the score close in the fi rst half of Friday’s conference contest in John Day before Stanfi eld pulled ahead for a 68-52 win. Prospector head coach Kelsy Wright said, although they took the loss, it was still a good game. “They made some adjustments and pulled ahead,” he said of the Tigers, noting that one of their players, who hadn’t been shooting as well in past games, started hitting the basket. Prospector Jacob Vaughan had a game-high 16 points, and Mason Gerry had 13. For Stanfi eld, Elias Esquivel had a team high of 15. Prospector Devon Stokes landed a 3-point shot halfway through the fi rst quarter, and two min- utes later sank another 3-pointer. Stanfi eld led 14-13 going into the second. In the fi rst minute, Vaughan landed a 3-pointer and, less than two min- utes, later added another with Warner Robertson also hitting for 3 in the fi nal minute. Prospector Tanner Elliott was strong on rebounding for the night. He grabbed the ball 8-10 feet out for a put- back at the halftime buzzer for 2 points, moving Grant Union to within 1 point of Stanfi eld, the Tigers with GRANT UNION STATS Jacob Vaughan: 16 points (two 3-pointers, 4-8 free throws) Mason Gerry: 13 (5-7 free throws) Jordan Hall: 8 (2-2 free throws) Tanner Elliott: 6 Devon Stokes: 6 Warner Robertson: 3 (one 3-pointer) Team free throws 11-19 The Eagle/Richard Hanners Grant Union junior Mason Gerry shoots over Stanfi eld defenders with senior Tanner Elliott ready to rebound on Jan. 18. the 29-28 lead. Grant Union took another conference loss on the road, 58-45, to the Union Bobcats on Saturday. “It was a close game all the way until the end,” Wright said. He said they had to start fouling in the fourth. “They were making free throws, and we weren’t capitalizing on our offense — nothing was falling for us,” he said. Wright said the team has been adapting to hav- ing starter Tristan Morris out with an ankle injury, but added they hope to have Morris back after this week. “We’re just trying to come together,” Wright said. “We’re doing every- thing right. I’m proud of how hard they want to work for me.” The coach said they’re focused on preparing for Heppner this week, and they are also getting ready for Pilot Rock. Grant Union will face the Pilot Rock Rockets at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road, and they host the Hep- pner Mustangs at 4 p.m. Saturday.
