with her loving family by her side. A
graveside memorial service to cele-
brate Mary will be held on Saturday,
Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at Moon Creek
Cemetery near Mt. Vernon. After the
graveside service, friends are invited
to join the family at the Grant Coun-
ty Fairgrounds Trowbridge Pavilion
for a celebration of Mary’s life at 1 p.m.
Mary was born on July 19, 1955, to Fred and Virgin-
ia Spinney in San Diego, California. Mary is survived
and loved by her husband, James Weaver; daughter Man-
dy Weaver and son Jarrod Weaver; siblings Kim Johns,
Fred Spinney Jr., Gary Spinney and Bonnie Foster. Mary
is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews and five
grandchildren.
Mary has been a pillar and leader in the Grant County
community since her family’s arrival in 1971. Mary grad-
uated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1973 and married
the love of her life shortly thereafter. Jim and Mary built a
life together of love, hard work and world travel. As a wife,
mother, sister, grandmother, daughter and friend, Mary was
devoted to the happiness and health of all she shared life
with. Mary was a lover of people, travel, fun, friends and
her family.
Thank you to all who have supported Mary and her fam-
ily through these challenging times. Mary could not control
the shortened length of her life, but she certainly managed
the depth of her life by radiating love through her daily
interactions and embracing all of the moments with family
and friends.

Grant Union music di-
rector Lavana James led the
junior and senior bands and
combined choir on Oct. 30 in
their fall concert titled “Mys-
tery at GU” at the school in
John Day.
Between songs, sopho-
more bass singer Will Car-
penter provided a narration,
sprinkled with puns, about a
mysterious missing tuba.
The repertoire included
“Ancient Moon,” played by
the bands, and “Back to the
50s” from the choir, which
included dance movements
to songs such as “Jailhouse
Rock,” “Will You Still Love
Me Tomorrow” and “Rockin’
Around the Clock.”
James said she’s been
pleased with the students’
growth.
“I have enjoyed working
with the kids,” she said. “The
group as a whole has a good
enthusiasm for music.”
She said she’s enjoyed
combining the different
groups for a more cohesive
unit, and she encourages ideas
from the students, so they can
see parts of themselves in the
performance.

Union alumna, is in her first
year teaching at Grant School

Calvin Eston Weissenfluh, 95, of
Bend, Oregon, passed away peaceful-
ly on Oct. 15.
Cal was born Aug. 10, 1923 in
Long Creek, Oregon, the oldest of
three children of Garland and Leo-
na (Blackwell) Weissenfluh. During
WWII, Cal enlisted in the U.S. Ma-
rine Corps and was stationed in Ha-
waii. After his discharge in 1946, he
entered Oregon State College gradu-
ating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Sci-
ence degree in Forest Management. In Cal’s 30-year career with
the Forest Service he served as Assistant District Ranger in Dale
(Umatilla NF), District Ranger in Burns and Lakeview (Ochoco
NF) and a time on the Fremont NF, retiring in 1978.
Cal’s paternal ancestors emigrated from Switzerland
to Long Creek in the 1890’s. A chance encounter with
a Swiss tourist in 1950 led to Cal’s discovery of Weis-
senfluh relatives in Guttannen, Switzerland; he trav-
eled to Switzerland and maintained contact with Swiss
relatives.
Later in life, Cal pursued his interest in genealogy. He brought
the family together for a reunion in the ’80s and created a slide
show of the Weissenfluh family history and narrated it at the most
recent reunion in 2017. Cal is survived by his wife of 59 years,
Shirley; half-brother Harvey Sweek; son Gregg; daughters Reigh
Hays, Dawn White, Diana Stoffel, Jenny Hansford and Tracy
Hayes; grandsons Scott Hayes, Gary Weissenfluh, Jamie Hayes
and David Weissenfluh; nephew Tim McAllister; and nieces
Neva Lynde, Treva Archer and Tracie Valenzuela.
He was preceded in death by his brother John “Bud” Weis-
senfluh; sister Helen McAllister; and grandson Kristopher
Hayes. At Cal’s request, no local service will be held. His urn
will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland
with full military honors at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Cal’s memory may be made to
the Humane Society of Central Oregon.
