Circuit Court
Cooper J. Wellington, 28,
John Day, pleaded guilty Sept.
20 under a one-year diversion
plea to driving under the influ-
ence of intoxicants committed on
July 16. He was ordered to pay
a $490 fee and install an ignition
interlock device in any vehicle he
drives. A second charge of reck-
less driving was dismissed.
Toby J. Dreyer, 36, Prairie
City, was convicted by a jury
Sept. 14 of misdemeanor driving
under the influence of intoxicants
on April 7. He was sentenced to
20 days in jail, 24 months pro-
bation and $3,255 in fines and
fees. His license was suspended
for one year, and he was ordered
to install an ignition interlock de-
vice on any vehicle he drives.

Sept. 16: Responded to a
two-vehicle crash on South
Canyon Boulevard in John Day.
A southbound pickup reported-
ly drifted across the centerline
and sideswiped a Jeep and then
ended up in a ditch. All occu-
pants denied medical treatment.
Darren W. Pettyjohn, 56, Can-
yon City, was cited for careless
driving.
Sept. 18: Responded to a sin-
gle-vehicle crash on Highway
402 near Hamilton. A deer ran
onto the roadway and jumped
into the windshield of a compact
car, which ended up leaving the
road. The driver received a mi-
nor forehead injury.
Sept. 18: Michael Gibson,
54, Long Creek, was arrested
on an outstanding warrant from
Crook County.
Sept. 19: Responded to a
truck accident on Highway 395
north of the Ritter junction. The
driver of a truck carrying boric
acid reportedly fell asleep, and
the trailer ended up partially
down a steep embankment.
Sept. 21: Received a report of
a buck deer on West 13th Street
in Prairie City that had been
killed by an arrow.
Sept. 22: Responded to a mo-
torcycle accident with serious
injuries on Highway 26 west of
the Grant County line. The Har-
ley Davidson left a curve in the
roadway and hit a tree. Stephen
A. Galbraith, 58, British Colum-
bia, was airlifted to St. Charles
Hospital in Bend. He later was
arrested and charged with driv-
ing under the influence of intoxi-
cants for alcohol.

gle-vehicle crash on Highway
19 in John Day Fossil Beds

A. Townsend, 61, Vancouver,
was transported to the hospital
in John Day. She was cited for

An amateur radio op-
erator helped firefighters
respond quickly to a fire
south of Canyon City Sun-
day afternoon.
Outside of cellphone
service, Seth Klingbeil of
John Day used the amateur
radio repeater on Eagle
Peak to call in a fire to oth-
er amateur radio operators,
who were able to telephone
dispatch, Grant County
Amateur Radio Emergen-
cy Service Coordinator
Steve Fletcher said.
Klingbeil and his wife
were traveling to Wickiup
Campground when they
noticed the flames from a
downed power line on Can-
yon Creek Lane about 9
miles south of Canyon City.
John Day, Canyon City
and Oregon Department of
Forestry firefighters were
dispatched to the scene just
before 2 p.m. Firefighters
kept the blaze to 26.5 acres
and called it contained
Monday morning, accord-
ing to the John Day Inter-
agency Dispatch Center.
A power outage affect-
ing about 33 homes south
of Canyon City had been
reported at about 1 p.m., and
the power was restored at
6:30 p.m., according to Ore-
gon Trail Electric Co-op.
Klingbeil said he de-
served no accolades.
“I was just in the right
place at the right time with
the right equipment,” he said.
“I would strongly encourage
more people to get involved
with amateur radio as it can
be a great help where there is
no cellphone coverage.”

radio will be held in Grant
County in the coming
