On Monday, June 4, Olivia
Cornell and Merry Henry were
receiving guests and taking
care of the bookkeeping. Olivia
is the newest member of the site
council here and picks up al-
most all “dropped balls” around
here. Thanks so much, Olivia.
The past few days have been
stressful for us here, as we have
had to replace our freezer, and
it has turned into a much longer
fix than expected. We have had
to farm out our frozen foods at
the high school, and, as they
were closing for the summer,
we were misinformed that we
had to find another holding site.
After several hours of trying to
solve this, I had the good for-
tune of speaking with Carolyn
Stout, who went to the school
and had our problem solved.
They can continue helping us
until our freezer can be fin-
ished. Thanks, Grant Union and
Carolyn Stout!
Our meal on June 4 con-
sisted of macaroni and cheese
(yum) and a veggie soufflé
with homemade bread, and was
topped off with berry cobbler.
We have smaller groups in the
summer and had 19 diners, but
not much food left over. Great
meal, served by Chris Yriarte
and Virginia Miller from the
hospital guild. They have been
very active here, and we ap-
preciate both of them. Prior to
serving, they delivered meals
to John Day and Canyon City
while David Gill and Rodney
took the Mt. Vernon route. A to-
tal of 28 regular and 62 frozen
meals were delivered.
We have a small group
for our free tai chi class after
Monday’s lunch. Come join
us. It is led by Tyler Stoneman,
and we have room for you to
join. Tai chi helps with bal-
ance, strength, concentration
and more.
Thursday, June 7, found
Olivia and Merry back at the
greeter’s desk. Special guests
Todd McKinley and Cyn-
thia Tirico joined with Everett
King, Vickie Harrison and oth-
ers to stand in for our regularly
scheduled group who couldn’t
come. Thanks to Joan and Joel
Tayles and David Gill and his
crew for delivering a total of
34 meals. We also enjoyed the
company of Solutions Certified
Public Accountants, formerly
Oster Professional Group, who
sponsored our entrée. Bob and
Laurie Armstrong, along with
Barbara Hicks, Melissa Gal-
breath, Mitch Saul, Amy Walk-
er, Anna Bass, Don Jones and
special guests Imogene and Bill
Crittenden packed a table with
great conversation and enjoyed
the meal. We dined on pesto
chicken, twice-baked mashed
potatoes and old fashioned
stewed tomatoes, and for our
birthday of the month celebra-
tion, Driskill Memorial Chap-
el sponsored a lovely choco-
late cake. We also welcomed
some of our Prairie City bingo
players back. Nice to see Judy
Bracken, Jerry Williamson and
Carolyn Olson again.
FYI, I have some new
friends at my house: Dovey,
Slick, Sunny, Mary, Precious
and the twins, Bella and Anna-
belle and Pepper. (I think) Zeke
and Zoey helped with some of
the names. I would have a con-
test, but some of you may think
they’re snakes or hippos, so
never mind.

ye first the kingdom of God and
his righteousness, and all these
things will be added unto you.”

For our first meal for the
month of June, we had a large
crowd of 53 people on the
books and 10 takeouts. We
had a few guests who added to
that number. Among the guests
were Maria Thomas of Kim-
berly and Patrick Gamman. Mr.
Gamman is the new superin-
tendent of the John Day Fossil
Beds National Monument. He
wanted to introduce himself to
us and give a special invitation
to come out and visit and also
to welcome any suggestions for
the fossil beds. We also had a
new resident to the area, Cori
Azevedo. She is looking for
work if anyone needs a caregiv-
er; she does it all. Her contact
number is currently through
Jerry and Dinah Cowger’s
number. We welcome all these
new people to the area.
We had Jimmy Cole, Lin-
da Blakeslee and Judy Harris
for our greeters at the table.
Judy led us in the flag salute
and made the announcements.
Yours truly prayed over the
blessing of the meal. Jim-
my and Linda collected and
counted the money. The Len’s
Drug gift card winner was Pam
Calahan. The winners of the
free meal tickets were Donny
Lippert and Linda Blakeslee.
We thank everyone for their
generous support. There was a
free raffle held by Judy Harris
for all who came to lunch on
Tuesday. Krista Qual, the foot
doctor, was the lucky winner.
Our cooks Carrie Jewell and
Teawna Jewell cooked us up
some yummy tater tot casse-
role, carrots, fresh tossed green
salad and chocolate cookies for
dessert. We thank them for their
tireless efforts.
Veanne Weddle was present
and gave us some valuable in-
formation. Just a reminder, the
health fair will be June 15 in
John Day from 6 a.m. to noon.
If you need assistance, there are
senior scholarships available, and
you can give Veanne a call. Also,
Veanne gave a warning to seniors
that your Medicare cards are cur-
rently being changed but do not
under any circumstances give out
your Social Security number if
anyone calls on the phone asking
for such information, or any oth-
er pertinent information regard-
ing your bank accounts numbers
or any such thing. These scam
artists try and get you to give
them this information and will
wipe out your bank accounts. So
please beware.
Lisa Newburger, who was
responsible for helping to get
the senior center a substan-
tial grant, is helping out on
the Rimrock Riders event at
the Brasada Ranch in Powell
Butte. This event will be held
from June 29-30 and is also
where they will have rescued
horse training, shows, classes
and adoptions going on. The
admission is free. There will
be a raffle, silent auction, food
vendors and great family fun.

egonrescuechallenge.com.
We thank Bob Cockerell,
David Stubblefield and Den-
nis Abraham for their work
with the concrete pours and all
the other work. We also thank
Doug Sweek for his brush hog
work and moving gravel out
back. We appreciate all the
work of these men. Thank you!
I will have to continue my
story next week.

Didn’t see much about
D-Day this year. “Those
who do not learn from histo-
ry are doomed to repeat it,”
or something like that. Let
us value the sacrifice that so
many made on that day 74
years ago.
Made another trek to
Bend to see the hand doctor.
She determined that another
surgery is in Derrol’s future.
On the trek we encountered
the new bloom of bicycle
riders.
Must have been 50-plus
we had to avoid coming and
going.
Wouldn’t be so bad if they
would keep in their bike path
– and have lights or pennants
or bright clothing.
Coming around a corner
and having to either brake
or swerve because a cyclist
is standing in your lane in-
specting his flat tire is very
hard on my nerves.
On another front, the car-
rots finally came up. Now if
we can deter the deer.
Ginger led the flag sa-
lute, and Tom Roark asked
the blessing on our picnic
dinner of sausage on a bun,
potato salad, chips, bean sal-
ad, watermelon and all the
condiments.
Dessert was frozen lime
Jell-O with nuts, coconut
flakes, pineapple pieces in it
and topping.
Was only a cupful, but
was it filling. Good job,
Marjean and Joy.
The winner of the $5
gift card donated by Len’s
Drug was Nancy Spence.
She and Storey Mooser were
welcomed back. We had 56
names recorded by Carla,
who is filling in for Pam this
month. But she had to play
pinochle first.
Larry, Carlos and Ken
took care of the home de-
liveries. Lorna and Krystin
bought Bud Salisbury, Gor-
don Sindt and Marilyn Ran-
dall from the Blue Mountain
Care Center.
The
announcements:
Would you like to have the
tai chi instructor come here?
And if you want something
a little more aggressive,
daughter-in-love Laurel will
be starting TXD (taekwon-
do) class in July.
Ron Dowse will be do-
ing the driving course here
on July 25 from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. with a break for lunch.
Signup sheet will be forth-
coming.
There will be no meal at
the center on July 4. Be sure
to attend the Fourth of July
celebration in your area.
Did you know that after
the Declaration of Indepen-
dence was signed, it took
from 1776 until 1781 to con-
vince the British to leave us
alone?
Then there was the War
of 1812. Always wondered
what it was all about. Well,
read in the history book
about it, and it seems to have
been an economic-based
conflict during Napoleon’s
endeavor to become emper-
or of Europe. Hard to under-
stand during the 21st centu-
ry’s globalism.
Jeremiah 31:21, 22

guideposts. Take note of
the highway, the road that
you take. Return to your
towns. How long will you
wander. …”
