Winther wins age
division at Eastern
Oregon Half Marathon

Stanley Winther, 70, of John Day won the 60-and-
older age division in the 13.1-mile race at the 2018
Eastern Oregon Half Marathon in Spray. He finished
in 2:05:19. Brandon Basher, 42, won the race overall
with a time of 1:23:39.

rant Union High School’s 2017-18
varsity sports players and fans will
have plenty of glory days to look
back on in the years ahead.
The Prospectors had 11 teams qualify
for state. One team and two individuals
won state championship titles.
Grant Union Athletic Director Jason
Miller said the upperclassmen were strong
this year, with freshmen and sophomores
also contributing.
“We have good groups,” he said. “The
seniors have been great leaders in all
sports.”
He added the coaches worked to get the

Recreational swimmers
can dive in from 1-4:30
p.m. Mondays through Fri-
days.
Pool passes for those
who live within the John
Day-Canyon City Parks
and Recreation District cost
$80 for an individual or
$130 for a family.
For those out of district,
the cost is $95 for individ-
uals and $160 for families.
An open lap swim is
held Tuesdays and Thurs-
days from 12-1 p.m. with
limited lanes.
The adult lap swim time
for 16 and older is 5-6:30
p.m. on Mondays, Wednes-
days and Fridays and 5-6
p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays.

Open swim nights are
6:30-8 p.m. on Mondays
and Fridays, and family
night swim is at the same
time on Wednesdays.
Water aerobics is from
6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursdays.
The John Day swim
team meets for practice
from 6- 10 a.m. Mondays
through Fridays, and swim
lessons are held between
the hours of 10-11 a.m.
Swim lessons begin at
the pool on June 18, and
children are required to be
at least 43 inches tall. The
cost is $40 in district or $45
out of district for the two-
week lessons. Private les-
sons are also available.
