we’re second or third, we’re going to
district for sure.”
If Grant Union takes the second
spot, they will face Heppner, which
swept Dufur 2-0 on May 5.
Williams said his team will host
the game in the afternoon Friday,
May 11, the time to be determined.
If Grant Union takes third, they will
travel to Culver.
If the Prospectors win this week’s
game, they will continue with another
district playoff contest next week.
Williams said that game was orig-
inally set for Tuesday, May 15, and
said he’d like to see it remain sched-
uled for that day. The date, time and
location will be updated online at

becomes available.
Pros sweep Union 3-0

“It
was a hot day.”
Grant Union head
baseball coach Dusty
Williams wasn’t refer-
ring to the 80-plus degree weather but
the Prospector bats, as the team swept
the Union Bobcats in John Day Satur-
day 12-6 and 10-2.
Their first win over the Bobcats
this week was May 1 in Union, 13-2.
With the wins, Grant Union will
compete in the 2A/1A Special District
6 playoffs on Friday. The game may
be played in John Day Friday after-
noon, or in Culver.
Grant Union topped off Saturday’s
game two with 4 runs in the sixth in-
ning, including a 2-run homer from
Warner Robertson, who also pitched
the game.
In the inning, Grant Union had two
outs when Cole Deiter fired things up,
batting in a runner.
Wade Reimers then singled, and
Robertson hit the homer.
“The biggest thing about these guys
is they don’t ever want that third out,”
Williams said. “I don’t know how
many times this last three-game series
we’ve had several innings where we
scored 5 runs with two outs.
“Once they get going — hitting’s
contagious — nobody wants to be the
last out of an inning, so they just get
going, and they’ve just been hitting
the ball really well.”
In game one, Grant Union and
Union, led by head coach Jon Reyn-
olds, were tied 1-1 heading into the
bottom of the third.
The Prospectors had two outs as the
ball flew straight into the opponent’s
glove. Then Grant Union warmed
things up.
Reimers reached first on an error,
followed by a double from Robertson,
sending Reimers home.
Robertson advanced to third on a
Union error. Then Ty McDaniel sin-

gled to score Robertson.
Next up to bat was Jacob Vaughan
who doubled, followed by a big hit
from Roen Langum, sending McDan-
iel and Vaughan home.
Robertson’s homer was his second
for the week. He also hit it out of the
park on the road in Union May 1.
“He’s shortening himself up really
good and moving himself up in the
number three spot,” Williams said.
Zack Deiter pitched two and a
third innings in game one, with Lo-
gan McCluskey relieving him in the
inning and pitching the fourth and
part of the fifth.
Peyton Neault and Russell Hodge
also had a turn on the mound in the
final innings.
A couple weeks ago, it looked as
if Grant Union would need to win all
their games to make it to the district
playoffs — and they dropped one of
three games to Weston-McEwen. The
scene changed when Elgin gave up a
game to Weston-McEwen.
“That helped us out a bunch. It’s
funny how things turn,” Williams
said.
Grant Union’s next game depends
on how things play out between Pi-
lot Rock and Elgin past press time on
Tuesday.
“If Elgin wins both games, it
would knock us to the third spot,”
Williams said. “If they split, we’ll
be in the second-place spot. Whether

Prospector Cameron Hallgarth outdid himself
Friday, setting personal records in javelin, discus
and shot put at the Grant Union Invitational in
John Day.
He placed first in javelin, with a throw of 152-
06.50, and fourth in his other two events.
“Everyone improved and got their ‘PRs,’” he
said. “Hopefully, we can carry this on to districts
and do our best.”
Prospector Drew Lusco competed in shot put,
finishing first with a mark of 42-01, his personal
best.
Grant Union’s Kaylee Wright placed first in
her events, setting a season record in the 100 with
a time of 12.99 and a personal record in javelin
with a throw of 138-0.
“Today was successful,” Wright said. “There
wasn’t a lot of competition (four teams compet-
ed), but we were able to make the best of it and
hopefully carry that out to districts.”
Teammate Shanniyah Hall placed second in
the 100 with a time of 14.04, setting a personal
record.
Prospector Jozie Rude earned a first-place
finish in discus, setting a season record with a
throw of 111-0. She also placed first in shot put
and second in javelin and pole vault.
“It was a good warm up for districts, a very
relaxed and a successful meet,” Rude said.
The Grant Union girls placed first with 271
points, followed by Prairie City with 89, Long
Creek 61 and Imbler 37.
The Grant Union boys placed first with 234
points, followed by Prairie City with 91, Long
Creek with 83 and Imbler with 80.
The Long Creek 4x100 boys team had an ex-
citing run at the event, placing first out of five
teams. Luka Pesic, who ran with Jaime Ball-
esteros, Mike Dongyuu and Rafael Gumerato
said they’re working to beat the school record
of 47.00, and although they did not quite reach
that goal, they set a personal record with a time
of 47.37.
“It feels great,” Pesic said of the win. “We
worked really hard for this. We just hope to beat
our PR each track meet, and it finally came true.”
“They’re excited,” said Long Creek head coach
Linda Studtmann. “They’ve been working on drills
in practices to improve their speed and handoffs.”
Long Creek’s Dorotha Johnson increased her
mark in the triple jump by over 4 feet for a person-
al record and fourth place.

best in the triple jump, placing second with a mark
of 37-5. He also placed second in the 200, fourth
in the 100 and fifth in the 4x100 with his team, in-
cluding Jonathan Haskins, Levi Burke and Bran-
don Horrell. Haley Pfefferkorn placed third in the
javelin for the girls, and she was first among the
1A competitors. She said she’s optimistic about
the upcoming district meet.
“I keep getting bumped between second and
third, so hopefully, I can get first or second and
make it to state,” she said.
Grant Union head coach Sonna Smith said the
meet was a big success.
“We had many personal bests, and our athletes
are fine-tuning for district right when we need
them,” she said. “We can only take the top three
in each event to district, and our home meet was a
chance for athletes sitting in fourth and fifth place
on the team to move up.”
She said both the girls and boys teams are per-
forming well.
“We will be taking a strong girls team to dis-

trict and hoping to make it three in a row as district
champion,” she said, adding, “Enterprise girls are
set to give us a stiff challenge at district.”

Local track and field athletes are
making the most of the final days be-
fore their district meets next week.
Prairie City Panther Levi Burke
showed his all-around athletic skill,
placing first in the pole vault and sec-
ond in javelin on Thursday, competing
for the first time in those events. He
also placed first in the high jump.
Prairie City hosted the High Desert
League Meet, and the Panther boys and
girls teams had second-place finishes,
behind Adrian. Long Creek boys and
Jordan Valley girls placed third. (Local
results below.)
Eight Prairie City boys and seven
Prairie City girls set personal records at
the HDL.
“The nice thing about them setting
personal records at this time of the sea-
son is that it means they’re peaking,”
said Prairie City head coach Nate Bar-
ber.
Barber said Burke is doing well in
his new events.
“It just shows the athleticism he
has,” Barber said. “He can run and
jump, and his hard work shows.”
The coach said Brandon Horrell,
who was sick, overcame the challenge
and had a personal record in the 400 by
over half a second.
“Those who have heart are showing
it,” Barber said. “They’re showing their
consistency, and they’re setting person-
al records.”
Barber said these athletes, as well
as Jake McHatton and Samantha Work-
man, are working hard and getting
stronger, boosting the team.
He said Workman is continuing to
set personal records in multiple events
“week in and week out.”
“She takes time to ask for advice,”
he said. “You can build a program
around that.”
