Monday, April 23, Ron
Dowse and I were greeters;
Lisa, Danny and Curt covered
a gloomy kitchen without Shay,
who was in Boise waiting for
news of his mom’s surgery, and
I will tell you now so you don’t
have to wait: She came through
the surgery better than anyone
had even hoped. Thanks for
prayers. Rachel Carpenter, with
Susan and George Sintay from
the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, did a bang
up job for us, beginning with
Rachel who, alone, delivered
meals to John Day and Canyon
City. David Gill and Rodney
from Step Forward took the
Mt. Vernon route. Altogether,
they delivered 29 regular and
24 frozen meals. Welcome to
the Sintays, thank you for serv-
ing us. Susan led us in the flag
salute. Our drawings produced
winners: Rachel won the Len’s
Drug gift card and Rober-
ta Dowse won the free meal.
George gave the blessing on
our meal. Celebrating Nation-
al Cherry Cheesecake Day, we
dined on chili dogs, tater tots,
carrots and of course, delicious
individual cherry cheesecakes.
We love you, Lisa Perei-
ra! You did a great job with
Veanne home ill, Shay being
gone and our new refrigeration
system being delivered. Tyler
Stoneman from Blue Mountain
Hospital was here to lead our
small group in Tai Chi. We are
having a great time, still room
to add a few more folks.
Our annual luau was so
much fun. Everett King and
Jeanette Julsrud were greeters
and Olivia Cornel sold 50/50
tickets. Some nuts dressed
Hawaiian; most behaved. Our
friends from St. Elizabeth Cath-
olic Church, Agnes and Walt
Hall, Jimmy Maple and David
Turner, did our service, assisted
by Jean Willey. Jimmy and Da-
vid did table setup and meal de-
livery earlier to John Day and
Canyon City, while David Gill
and Rodney from Step Forward
did the Mt. Vernon run. A total
of 35 meals were delivered.
Walt Hall opened our time
by leading us in the Pledge of
Allegiance. We drew for a
Chester’s Thriftway card, won
by Janice Hunt, and then Carl
Swank won the Valley View
meal, followed by the blessing
of our time together and our
meal by Jimmy Maple. We
dined on Huli Huli chicken,
Polynesian rice, glazed carrots,
homemade bread, and tropical
carrot cake with cream cheese
frosting. Our thanks to the
meal sponsor, Old West Federal
Credit Union.
Linda Stoltz outdid her-
self on decorations. Thanks so
much for all of your time and
creativity. Linda collects things
all year to use for special draw-
ings, and had a bunch to draw
for. We love you! We learned
that Bonnie Kocis missed our
regular birthday meal, so hap-
py birthday, Bonnie. Special
guests: Randa Persinger and
her sister Barb Sorensen, Lyn-
da Christiansen and dad, Chuck
Corwin, Dawn Hindman, Lois
Bidasolo, Jen Winkler, Betty
Sprague and daughter Pam with
her husband Mike Durr, Norma
Rynearson, Georgia Osborn,
Helen Bogart and Kim Ausland
were all here from Valley View.
Special friend Jim Hamsher
joined us too.

the Spirit of the Lord is, there is

We had yet again anoth-
er delicious meal for our last
Tuesday lunch for the month
of April prepared by our great
chefs Terry Cade and Carrie
Jewell. We had pork roast,
scalloped potatoes, asparagus,
biscuits, and peach cooler cake
for dessert. We are immense-
ly thankful to our dedicated
cooks. Our greeters were Bo-
dean Andersen, Jimmy Cole,
Linda Blakeslee, and Judy Har-
ris. Judy led us in the flag salute
and made the announcements.
Yours truly prayed the bless-
ing over the meal. Jimmy and
Linda collected and counted the
money.
There were two sets of priz-
es to be won on this particular
day. Judy Harris had a free
raffle set up for all guests that
came to lunch. The prize win-
ners were Tyler Stoneman of
John Day, Carrie Jewell, Doro-
thy Jordan, and Donna Camp-
bell. The other usual prizes of
free meal tickets went to Betty
Richards and Jerry Cowger.
Rickie Doland won the Len’s
Drug gift card. We thank all for
their support.
We had a few guests join us.
Jim Hamsher from Prairie City
was present. He is running for
county judge. We also had Ty-
ler Stoneman, from John Day,
who is our Tai Chi instructor.
Lastly, Theda Phelps’ grandson
John Paul Osburn came from
Heppner with his fiancé Shaw-
na and their son Mikey. We had
40 guests on the books and fif-
teen take-outs.
There were several import-
ant announcements made, I
hope I have room to fit them
all. Firstly, the rummage sale
was a success. The funds raised
were $2,900 with 550 volunteer
hours put in. We thank every-
one who participated with set-
ting up and then boxing up of
everything to donate the unsold
items to other organizations
that help to distribute to people
in need in other areas. We thank
Ray Davis for making the chili
and Doug Sweek for moving
heavy items with his tractor. We
thank the 4-H kids for having a
meal available for purchase for
customers. All the concerted
efforts of the community made
for a wonderful and efficient
event.
Other announcements were
that there will be an EMT din-
ner on May 5 and pie donations
would be much appreciated.
Tickets are available from any
EMT volunteers. Please come
and support our local EMTs.
Please keep Marva Walker
in your prayers, she took a fall
and broke her hip and is recov-
ering. There will be a bridal
shower for Teawna Conklin at
the senior center on Sunday,
May 6. For more info, please
call Carrie Jewell. I saved the
best announcement for last.
Our very wonderful friend
Bruce Hansen, who has done
much for our little town, has
secured for us over $39,000
from the Joyce Miller Owens
Charitable Foundation! Bruce
lives on Sauvie Island in Port-
land but also has a place here
on Rudio Ridge. He persuaded
the board members on Sauvie
Island to help the Monument
Senior Center. We are indebted
to Bruce for all that he has done
and donated for our communi-
ty. We also want to express our
warmest thanks to the board for
their generous donation.

Oh, what a beautiful
mornin’. I do believe that spring
has finally arrived in Grant
County. The tulips that the
deer chomped off last month
have rebounded and put out
some buds. I even mowed the
lawn since Derrol can’t use his
repaired arm yet on the self-pro-
pelled one. But he couldn’t
stand it any longer, so he got out
the riding mower and managed
to run it around the church lot.
Takes a little bit of manipulating
to get it turned with only one
arm. But where there’s a will
there’s a way, right?
Carlos led the flag salute and
Jack asked the blessing. Ginger
could only find one birthday so
Bonnie Lake was awarded the
$10 gift certificate donated by
Huffman’s Market. (They got
“flocked,” too.)
Visitors included a long ago
graduate of Prairie City High
School – Dobie Shoun. Also,
Becky Tatum rounded up Lynn
McDonald and both came to
dine with us. Had a couple of
politicians, too: Harold Preston
and Archie Osburn. There were
66 names on the registration
book.
Kendra and Krystin brought
Marilyn Randall, Gordon
Sindt, Bud Salisbury and Mary
Crawford from the Blue Moun-
tain Care Center.
“If we could give every
individual the right amount
of nourishment and exercise,
we would have found the saf-
est way to health.” Now who
would you think said that?
Yes, somebody famous. And
somebody who was very in-
terested in health. Give up?
Hippocrates.
Our nourishment took the
form of a patty melt, pasta sal-
ad, pork and beans, fruit cock-
tail and bread pudding with
vanilla sauce for dessert. Wow,
what a meal. Was this our first
picnic? Excellent work, Mar-
jean and Joy.
Carla and I had to wait for a
third body in order to play pi-
nochle. The usual suspects had
other duties to attend to. Final-
ly, Drew arrived and we were
able to get our fix. We each won
one game, so that worked out
fine. Found out that the word
pinochle is a mispronouncing
and misspelling of the French
word binocle, meaning eye-
glasses. German immigrants
brought the game to America.
What escapes explanation is
what eyeglasses have to do
with this card game. Anyway,
we have a lot of fun playing it.
Keeps the brain young…
We want to give the hall a
new coat of paint this summer.
If you would like to contribute
to the cost of the paint, we have
a large, lovely vase at the reg-
istration desk to receive your
donations. All monies in that
container will be earmarked for
paint purchase. Thanks to those
who generously contributed.
Tom has completed the
sheetrock prep work and is
moving on to applying door-
jambs before priming the new
office. We can see the light at
the end of the tunnel. Thank
you so much for doing this
work, Tom. I appreciate it very
much. And thanks to all the oth-
er volunteers who do their jobs
each week to keep the center
operating: Del, Bonnie, Leone,
Pam, Scott, Larry Ken and Car-
los …
