The National Park Service is inviting community mem-
bers to comment on a draft Accessibility Self-Evaluation
and Transition Plan for the John Day Fossil Beds Nation-
al Monument. During the public open house, a brief pre-
sentation will describe the planning process and general
park accessibility, followed by the opportunity for public
questions and comments. People who are unable to attend
the meeting may submit comments at the project planning
website, parkplanning.nps.gov. Comments will be accepted

The John Day Volunteer Fire Department’s annual egg
hunt will offer egg coloring at 11 a.m., at the John Day Fire
Department, to decorate eggs for the following day’s Easter
egg hunt.
• 8 a.m., Dayville
Registration is at 8 a.m. The race starts at 9 a.m. Partic-
ipants can park at Dayville School for bus transportation to
the starting line on South Fork Road. The route will end at
Dayville City Park. The cost is $10 per person. The Buddy
Award, $50 cash, will be given to the winner of the 0- to
13-year-old group who completes the race on their own
legs. Most of the proceeds will benefit Cheryl Hubbird’s
fight against cancer. For more information, call Dayville

Fossil Beds accessibility plan open house
• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., John Day Senior Center
The class is open to all ages and is a nationally recog-
nized defensive driving course. Participants may qualify

Mt. Vernon, Dayville and John Day Saturday, March 31.
• 10 a.m., Mt. Vernon City Park
Prior to the Mt. Vernon Volunteer Fire Department’s
annual hunt, a free community breakfast by Living Word
Christian Center will be available at the Mt. Vernon Com-
munity Hall from 7-9:30 a.m., and fire truck rides will start
at 9 a.m. The fire department is accepting donations for the
egg hunt until the day of the event. For more information
or to inquire about donations, call the city of Mt. Vernon at
541-932-4688.
• 10:30 a.m., Dayville City Park
Following the Bunny Hop 5K, egg hunts for children in
four age divisions will be held. Age divisions range from
infant to sixth grade. Parents will also be able to participate
in a fun hunt. For more information, call Dayville City Hall
at 541-987-2188.
• Noon, Grant Union Junior-Senior High School
The annual John Day Volunteer Fire Department’s hunt
includes age groups from 0 to 3, 4 to 6, and 7 to 11. Drinks,
burgers, hot dogs and chips will be available, and hunters
can take a picture with the Easter Bunny.
Kids can enjoy ‘Passport to Fun’ over spring break

A “Kids Passport to Fun”
event will offer Grant Coun-
ty kids plenty of activities to
choose from Monday through
Friday, March 26-30, which
is spring break for many stu-
dents.
The event features tours of
three museums in John Day
and Canyon City, with histor-
ical reenactments, as well as
fun and educational activities
at the Canyon City Communi-
ty Hall.
The cost is $2 for the
week, and it’s geared toward
children ages 5-12.
Organizer Peggy Murphy,
the curator of the Grant Coun-
ty Historical Museum in Can-
yon City, said many people
are helping her get the activity
off the ground.
“I couldn’t have possibly
done it without all the won-
derful volunteers,” she said.

The John Day-Canyon
City Parks and Recreation de-
partment is sponsoring activi-
ties at the Canyon City Com-
munity Hall Monday through
Thursday, March 26-29.
Activities include: Lego
fun, OSU Extension; candle
dipping, South Fork Water-
shed Council; old-time pho-
to booth, Joelene Floyd; pelt
trunk, ODFW; homemade
peanut butter with mortar and
pestle, Forest Service; and face
painting and western games
and crafts. There will also be
cake and croquet in the Can-
yon City park.
Activities for ages 5-7 will
be held from 9 a.m. to noon,
and activities for ages 8-12 are
from 1-4 p.m.
The $2 fee will help pay for
child care, crafts and cake and
ice cream at Mabel’s restaurant.
