Monument/

compete
The Monument/Dayville
Tiger girls beat the Harper
Hornets 32-28 on the road
Friday.
Coach Taylor Schmadeka
said, with two starters out, the
girls stepped up to make key
plays when needed. He said
the Hornets played well at
home, but his team forced 40
turnovers in the win.
On Saturday, they added
a 37-28 win over the Ukiah/
Long Creek Mountain Lions
junior varsity team in Long
Creek.
“Saturday was a good
game for my less experienced
players to get some time on
the court, which will help
us going into districts when
we need them to go into the
game,” Schmadeka said.
The Tigers and Mountain
Lions made it a close game
through the half.
The girls were tied in the
first quarter, and Ukiah/Long
Creek had a 14-13 lead at the
half.
Ukiah/Long Creek coach
Amos Studtmann said they
maintained a lead into the
fourth quarter, then got into
foul trouble.
“We had yet another game
where Gladys and Dortha
(Johnson) both fouled out,”
he said, adding their remain-
ing players couldn’t quite
hold the line against the more
experienced Tigers.
Studtmann said Faith
Burnette was their offensive
“MVP” for the game.
The Monument/Dayville
Tiger boys fell 57-34 to Harp-
er and 56-36 to Ukiah/Long
Creek.
Studtmann said the Monu-
ment/Dayville boys were in-
tense in Friday’s game.
He said he looks forward
to facing them again over the
next couple of years as the
Tigers develop and gain ex-
perience.
A big lead in the first quar-
ter was a springboard for Uki-
ah/Long Creek, which then
rotated players through.
Monument/Dayville will
host Prairie City on Friday in
Dayville with the girls play-
ing at 6 p.m., and the boys at
7:30 p.m.
The Tigers take on Burnt
River on Saturday in their fi-
nal league game of the season
with the girls playing at 2 p.m.
and the boys at 3:30 p.m.
Ukiah/Long Creek plays
its final game against the
Crane junior varsity team on
the road with the girls playing
at 2 p.m. and the boys at 3:30
p.m.
Studtmann said he looked
forward to seeing how much
the girls have improved since
the last time they played
Crane. For the boys, he said
Ukiah/Long Creek lost by 1
point in their last contest.
“This will give them a
chance to redeem themselves
and finish strong,” he said.

What I like best about my sport: “I like
playing with my teammates. We are
really close, like a brotherhood.”
Coach’s Comment:
“James is dedicated to growth and to
practice. This year he’s picking up the
pace on defense, and he’s consistently
been our high scorer.”

Grant Union

competes at
Stayton
The Grant Union Gold
dance team attended their first
dance competition Saturday
in Stayton.
“The girls did well,” said
Grant Union head coach Kat-
tie Piazza. “They are doing
well with their expressions
and projection, how they pres-
ent themselves to the judges.”
She said their formations
were on point and they’re
“hitting their counts” (keep-
ing the beat).
“It gave us a good starting
point, and we know the work
that’s ahead of us now in a
highly competitive division
(4A/3A/2A/1A),” she said.
The 4A Valley Catholic
team took first and were grand
champions, meaning they re-
ceived the highest score of all
