Prairie City girls
fall to Adrian
in OT
The Prairie City Panther
girls basketball team started
last week’s competition off
with a 44-16 win over Burnt
River on Tuesday, but the
Antelopes’ full-court pres-
sure in Adrian on Saturday
proved too much.
“We played as good as
we’ve played all year,”
said Panther head coach Bo
Workman.
The Lady Panthers had
a 16-point lead in the mid-
dle of the third quarter, but
then the Antelopes applied
strong defensive pressure in
the fourth.
The teams were tied 42-
42 going into overtime, and
Adrian outscored Prairie
City 8-4.
“Adrian is tough no mat-
ter what,” Workman said.
“They played full-court
pressure, and we handled
it well. Adrian just doesn’t
give up.”
Workman said the key
quality for his players, mov-
ing forward, will be mental
toughness.
“We’re playing close
games with these better
teams, and we’re staying in
the game. We just need to
learn how to win the close
ones,” he said.
He added they’re close to
the other top five teams in
the league.
“It’s how it is every year
— it’s anybody’s game,” he
said. “For my kids, espe-
cially, being mentally pre-
pared for every game and

“You can’t stop and look
at the scoreboard — then
you start getting anxious,”
he said. “They fought to the

He added, “They were
tired, but they all wanted to
get back in.”
Ukiah/Long Creek ju-
nior Gladys Johnson said it
was a great game.
“We played our best and
worked with each other,”
she said.
Schmadeka said he was
happy with how his team
battled.
“I’m proud of the girls
for fighting for all the loose
balls at the end of the game,
bouncing back and coming
out with the 1-point win,”
he said.
Tiger Miranda Cook
said the competition Uki-
ah/Long Creek gave them
made it a fun game.
“They were better than I
thought they were going to
be,” she said.
Tiger Aubrey Werner
added she was pleased with
her team’s passing and re-
bounding.
Her teammate Sam Ad-
ams said the game would be
memorable mainly because
she caught the flu, but add-
ed, “I was panicking with
the scoreboard so tight, but
I’m happy that we pulled it
together as a team and man-
aged to become one.”

compete with
top in league
The Monument/Dayville
Lady Tigers were hampered
when a key starter was in-
jured in their battles against
the Adrian Antelopes and
the Jordan Valley Mustangs
last week. The Tigers fell
39-22 to Adrian on Friday
in Monument, and 54-35 to
the Mustangs on Saturday in
Jordan Valley.
The Tigers were down
12-8 in the first quarter
against the Antelopes, then
caught fire in the second to
tie the score, 17-17.
Adrian outshot Monu-
ment/Dayville 13-1 in the
third.
“In the fourth, we played
better defense, but it was
hard to bounce back af-
ter the third quarter,” said
Tiger head coach Taylor
Schmadeka. “We had some
costly mistakes, but we nev-
er stopped playing hard.”
Danielle Rhoda led the
Tigers with 9 points, fol-
lowed by Aubrey Bowlus
with 6. Faythe Schafer had
5 steals.
Schmadeka said, al-
though his team played
hard, they ran out of steam
against Jordan Valley.
“I knew it was going
to be a hard battle at their
place,” he said. “We stuck
with them for most of the
game.”
The Tigers were down
10-9 in the first and 25-16
at the half.
“We came out in the sec-
ond half shooting good, but
so did they,” the coach said.
“I’m very proud of how they
played and attitudes both
nights in two tough games.”
Rhoda led the Tigers
with 16 points, and Schafer
had 11.
“Aubrey Bowlus and De-
nali Twehues played good
defense both nights and got
lots of rebounds for us,”
Schmadeka said. “Courtney
Nichols did a good job fill-
ing the spot of one of our
hurt starters.”
The Monument/Dayville
boys, in rebuilding mode
this season, had a 63-38 loss
to Adrian, followed by a 68-
24 loss to Jordan Valley.
The Tiger teams will
host the Huntington Loco-
motives on Friday, the girls
at 6 p.m. and boys at 7:30
p.m., in Dayville and the
Crane Mustangs at 2 p.m.
and 3:30 p.m. Saturday in
Monument.
At 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday, the Tigers host
Grant Union junior varsity

younger players contribut-

The Lady Mountain Li-
ons had an uphill battle Fri-
day and Saturday when two
players were injured, one
with a dislocated hip and
another with a rolled ankle.
Conner said those players
still wanted to rejoin the
game, but had to stay on the
sidelines.
After a 37-25 loss to
Harper, the girls gained a
27-22 win over Four Rivers
in Ontario.
The Lady Mountain Li-
ons had a 17-15 lead at the
half against Harper, but then
the visitors were able to pull
away for the win.
Against Four Rivers, the
teams were tied 11-11 at the
half. Ukiah/Long Creek out-
scored 12-7 in the third and
kept the lead in the fourth for
the win.

sity on Tuesday, past press

The teams host Adrian ju-
nior varsity on Friday in Uki-
ah, 4 p.m. for the girls and
5:30 p.m. for the boys, and
they travel Saturday to face
Burnt River junior varsity in
Unity at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Conner said his goal is for
the boys and girls teams to
each think of themselves as
one team.
“We’re going to have to
stay healthy and stay togeth-
er,” he said.
