The Ukiah/Long Creek junior var-
sity Mountain Lions roared past the
Monument/Dayville Tigers in Day-
ville Tuesday, Jan. 16, for a solid 59-
34 win.
Ukiah/Long Creek’s Rafael Gu-
merato fired off for 6 points in the first
quarter, and Tiger Donovan Schafer
scored twice off rebounds from JT
Hand and Gabe Walker.
The Mountain Lions led 6-4, then
Ukiah/Long Creek added 3 more
when Luka Pesic landed a free-throw
shot and Thomas Kreamier scored 2.
Hand was on fire in the second,
scoring 10, including a 3-pointer. His
teammate Drew Wilburn added a free-
throw basket, but Ukiah/Long Creek

he Grant Union Prospector wrestling team battled for
second place at its home invitational Friday in John
Day.
Baker/Powder Valley finished in first place,
and Crane placed third.
More than 200 varsity and junior varsity
wrestlers flocked to Grant Union Junior-Se-
nior High School, and the bleachers were
packed with spectators.
Wrestlers from Hermiston, Crane, Hep-
pner/Ione, Irrigon, Baker/Powder Valley,
Union/Cove, Pine Eagle, Imbler, Adrian and
Elgin joined the Prospectors, competing on
the mats in the round-robin tournament.
Grant Union sophomore Drew Lusco (285) finished the
tournament 5-0 and is currently 27-3 on the season.
“The competition is good, and it’s nice having all these
teams here,” he said, adding it was a great opportunity to
show off the program to the community and visitors.
“There is some tough competition here,” said senior Collin

The Grant Union class of 2018
will host a dodgeball tournament
at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at the
school’s new gym.
The tournament is open to ages
16 and up, and with six people to a
team, minimum, with at least two
females per team.
The cost is $10 a person to par-
ticipate, and admission is $2 for
spectators.
There will be awards for best
costume and best team name.
Registration forms can be
picked up and turned in at the
school office and Les Schwab
Tires in John Day. Applications are
due Thursday, Feb. 8. The event is
open to anyone of qualifying age
who would like to participate.

After a sluggish start, Monument/Day-
ville shut down the Ukiah/Long Creek Lady
Mountain Lions in the fourth quarter for a
21-20 win on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in Dayville.
Neither team found the basket in the first
quarter, but Ukiah/Long Creek gained foot-
ing in the second.
Mountain Lions Dortha Johnson and Jen-
ny Kim each sank a basket. Then Kim went
2-2 at the free-throw line.
Tiger Denali Twehues got on the board,
shooting two 2-pointers.
Ukiah/Long Creek’s Lucchese “Casey”
Douglas made it 8-4, and Twehues attempt-
ed to score at the buzzer, after an intercep-
tion, but the shot didn’t make it in.
“We weren’t playing very aggressively in
the first half, and not boxing out,” said Ti-
ger head coach Taylor Schmadeka. “In the
second half, we picked it up and played our
game. We were doing the small things right.”
