The Lady Prospectors were
on the road again Saturday,
this time losing 49-52 to the
Lakeview Honkers (11-6),
currently ranked seventh
among 3A schools.
“We started off a little
slow and really weren’t
ready for their physicality,”
Hallgarth said.
By the half, Grant Union
was down by 16, having shot
0-13 from the 3-point line.
After some second-half
adjustments, Grant Union
started attacking the rim
and took a 1-point lead with
about 2 minutes left in the
game.

the 3A Burns Hilanders in

Wright said they will be
preparing for the Huskies this
week in practice. Wright is
hopeful their first league com-
petitions of the season go well.
“It’s always good to go
into league with a couple wins
off the bat,” he said. “We’d like
the community support (Fri-

and cheering for our boys and
girls going into league.”

“They’re a tough team,”
coach Workman said about
the Tigers. “They never
gave up.”
Next up for the Pan-
thers are three league
games: the 6-7 Crane
Mustangs away at 6 p.m.
Friday, the 4-4 Harper
Hornets away at 2 p.m.
(MT) Saturday and the
0-6 Burnt River Bulls at
home at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
For the Tigers, next up
are the Grant Union JV in
a nonleague away game
Tuesday, past press time,
and the 0-6 Burnt River
Bulls at home in Monument
at 6 p.m. Friday.
“Tough losses like this
the game but still managed
to have the last shot to tie
the game,” Hallgarth said.
“I loved our fight and not
(giving) up being down to a
top-10 team in 3A.”
Kaylee Wright led Grant
Union in scoring with 17,
followed by Trinity Hutchi-
son and McKrola with 8
each. Hailie Wright and
Moulton each scored 6,
Whitney McClellan scored 3
and Kaytlyn Wells scored 1.
The Grant Union girls
host the Elgin Huskies (6-
7) in the Prospectors’ league
opener at 6 p.m. Friday in
John Day.
On Saturday, they travel
to Union to face the Bobcats
in league competition set for
4 p.m. Then, Tuesday, Jan.

Grant Union Prospec-
tor wrestlers competed at the
Jan. 5-6 Cosgrove-Eschler
Wrestling Tournament in Jo-
seph, including sophomore
Drew Lusco who took home
the championship title in the
heavyweight division.
Prospector head coach Andy
Lusco said he was pleased with
Drew’s results.
“He wrestled well and beat
a high-quality opponent (Tra-
vis Jonsson of Neah-Kah-Nie)
twice on the weekend and went
5-0 overall,” the coach said.
He said they were a little
short-handed at the meet with
14 of his wrestlers competing.
“From this point forward
in the season, it is a big and
important push to the district
meet,” he said. “We need to
improve our conditioning and
execution in order to peak at
districts and achieve our goals.”
Grant Union will compete
Friday and Saturday at the Red-
mond Classic, which is a dual
meet tournament where the
Prospectors are seeded fifth for
their division.
“We are looking to improve
on our finish from last season
and would like to finish in the
top four,” coach Lusco said.
The Prospectors will host
the Grant Union Tournament at
12 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, in John
Day with 12 teams invited.

win over Burnt River on
Friday and had a 41-40 loss
in a high-pressure contest
against Crane’s junior var-
sity team on Saturday. Both
games were played in Long
Creek.
Ukiah/Long Creek coach
Amos Studtmann said he ex-
pected the win on Friday, af-
ter his team beat Burnt River
earlier in the season.
Facing Crane, Studtmann
said they fell short rebound-
ing to start, which hurt later
in the game.
“In the third quarter,
Crane pressed and our boys
gave up some critical passes
and allowed Crane to get a
10-point lead,” he said.

quarter, Studtmann said, but
it wasn’t quite enough to
push them over the top.
“Our kids did play a good
game, and they showed that
when the pressure is on at
the end of the game, they
have the will to win,” he
said.
Studtmann said he has a
positive outlook on their fu-
ture games when they go up
against opponents they’ve
seen earlier in the season.
“Our kids are really look-
ing forward to a second
chance,” he said.
The Ukiah/Long Creek
Mountain Lion junior varsi-
ty girls had a 1-point victory
over the Burnt River Bulls
on Friday 17-16, then fell
58-9 to the Crane Mustang
junior varsity team on Sat-
urday.
Studtmann,
who
co-coaches the boys and girls
teams with TC Conner, said
the Bulls almost pulled off
the win.
In the final two minutes of
the game, the Mountain Li-
ons were up by 4.
After they fouled Burnt
River a couple times, Bulls
player Shayla Winton went to
the free-throw line, shooting
3-4, nearly tying the game.
Ukiah/Long
Creek’s
matchup with Crane was an
uphill battle.
Studtmann said their
players who are newer to
basketball had a tough time
handling the man-to-man de-
fense.
“We’ll be working on that,
so later on we don’t crumble
under the pressure of the tight
man-to-man,” he said.
The team hosted Mitchell/
Spray on Tuesday in Long
Creek past press time.
The teams travel to Pilot
Rock on Thursday, where they
face the Rockets at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the teams
are on the road to Huntington
where they’ll face the Loco-
motives at 2 p.m.
On Tuesday, Jan. 16, they
will play the Monument/Day-
ville Tigers in Dayville at 5
p.m.
There were no surprises
in the Prairie City boys’ win
over Monument-Dayville in
Prairie City on Jan. 6.
The Tigers, with four
freshmen and one sopho-
more in the starting lineup,
were 0-9 coming into the
game. The 8-3 Panthers were
coming off a big win over
2A Grant Union on Dec. 28,
defeating the Prospectors
73-70.
In the first High Desert
League game of the season
for both teams, the Panthers
easily defeated the Tigers
75-29. The younger Mon-
ument-Dayville team was
overwhelmed in the first
quarter, falling behind 30-
2, but they did better once
Prairie City began to put
more JV players on the
court.
The score was 45-15
at the half, but the Tigers
could put only 4 points on
the board in the third quar-
ter, falling behind 66-19.
“Prairie City is a heck of
a team with lots of skill,” Ti-
ger coach Jeff Schafer said.
“They know how to play the
game.”
Senior Dorran Wil-
son led the Panthers with
26 points, including one
3-pointer. He made sever-
al opportunistic steals and
easily slashed through the
Monument-Dayville
de-
fenders for the quick layup.
Junior Levi Burke domi-
nated the boards for the Pan-
thers and put in 20 points.
Freshman Jojari Field daz-
zled the home crowd with
four 3-pointers, ending the
game with 14 points.
Rounding out the Prai-
rie City scoring were junior
Syd Holman with 9 points
and Lucas McKinley and
Declan Zweygardt with 3
apiece. The Panthers were
five of seven from the free-
throw line in a relatively
clean game with few fouls.
Freshman
Donovan
Schafer led the Tigers with
8 points, followed by fresh-
man JT Hand with 6, sopho-
more Drew Wilburn with 5,
freshman Mark Thomas and
senior Rafael Dualibi with
4 apiece and freshman DJ
Howell with 2. The Tigers
were one of five from the
free-throw line.
“We’re a young team,
but the future is good,”
coach Schafer said about
the Tigers. “We just need to
fight through this year.”
Schafer said the Tigers
can play well against young
teams, and they’ll have
that chance in a non-league
away game against the
Grant Union JV on Tuesday,
past press time. After that is
a league game in Monument
against the 0-5 Burnt River
Bulls at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Panthers have three
league games lined up: the
6-7 Crane Mustangs away
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the 2-3
Harper Hornets away at
3:30 p.m. (MT) Saturday
and the 0-7 Burnt River
Bulls at home at 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday.
“Crane will be tough,”
Prairie City Coach Sam
Workman said. “You can’t
underestimate anyone in the
league.”

What I like best about my sport: “I like
spending time with my friends. We’ve been playing
basketball together for a long time — eight years. I
really enjoy the sport, the competition and the
excitement of close games.”
Coach’s Comment:
“Cauy is a universal player. He can play
almost anywhere and guard anyone.
He hardly ever comes off the court.
He’s a hard worker and a very
