The Prairie City Parent Teacher Committee is hosting a
bingo night for anyone who wants to compete for cash prizes.
The cards are 25 cents each or five for $1, and daubers are
$1. A potato bar and drinks will be offered. Proceeds benefit

Little League signups

Youths ages 7-16 will have the chance to register for Little

OSU Extension awards local contributors
William ‘Billy’ Kerstein
Nov. 21, 1951 - Dec. 13, 2017
William “Billy” Kerstein, 66, of Kel-
so, Washington, passed away Wednes-
day, Dec. 13, at his home. A celebration
of life will be held this Memorial Day at
the annual family reunion in John Day.
Details will be posted later. All who
knew Kerstein are welcome.
Kerstein was born in Butte, Mon-
tana, on Nov. 21, 1951, to Wilbert and
Lorene Kerstein. The family moved to
Long Creek when he was about 2 years
old. He was raised in the John Day area, graduating from Grant
Union High School. After high school, he joined the Navy and
served four years.
Kerstein married Becky Johnson when he returned home
from the Navy. They later divorced.
Kerstein is survived by three children, sons William Jr. and
Mathew and daughter Shirley. He is also survived by brothers
Jimmy and wife, Debbie, and Terry; sister, Candace; 10 grand-
children; and two great-grandchildren.
Kerstein enjoyed anything country and western. He enjoyed
playing guitar, spending time with friends and family, working
on old trucks and cars and fishing for salmon and steelhead with
his brothers. He also was an accomplished baker. His engaging
smile will forever be missed.

Althea L. Gibbs, 82, of Stanfield died
on Dec. 23 in Richland, Washington.
Gibbs was born on Aug. 7, 1935, in
Heppner to parents Merle Cecil and Lu-
ella Agnes Baird Swaggart. She attend-
ed Ritter Schoolhouse before her family
moved to Athena, where she graduated
from McEwen High School in 1953.
She married Clayton Gibbs on Nov. 22,
1953, in Yuma, Arizona. They owned
and operated a ranch on the Middle Fork
of the John Day River near Galena. She moved to Stanfield in the
early 1990s where she has lived since. She was past president on
FCE (Family Community Education) and longtime secretary of
the Western States Junior Rodeo Association. She enjoyed quilt-
ing, cooking, flowers, her Roundup Athletic Club swim group
and cherished time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son Zane Gibbs (Janice), Stanfield;
daughter Marcy Rosenberg (Brad), Pendleton; brother Cecil
Swaggart, Hermiston; sister Marylou Blackwell, Long Creek;
eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son Bill Gibbs and
sister Betty Kennedy.
A celebration gathering will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.
13, at the Pendleton Eagles Lodge, 428 E. Main St., Pendleton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fred Hutchinson
Cancer Research, 1100 Fairview Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98109.

The family of Ben Ladd would like to take this opportunity to
sincerely thank each and every one of our wonderful friends who
helped us through such a difficult time. The beautiful flowers
and food and so many cards are deeply appreciated by all of us.
We are so grateful to Connie Wood for facilitating the
gathering aſter the funeral on such short notice. The food again
was wonderful and all of “Connie’s Crew” are so appreciated for
their help and food contributions.
We are grateful to call Grant County home.
The Eagle reported that Omar C. Medina, 20, was arrested
Dec. 24 and charged with violating a no-contact order. The infor-
mation was from the John Day dispatch logs. For clarity, Omar
Ceja Medina, 24, formerly of Grant County, was not arrested or
charged.
