points for Grant Union, hold-
ing Prairie City to 4 in those
final minutes.
Prospector Kaylee Wright
led the scoring for both teams
with 19, followed by Panther
Brianna Zweygardt with 13.
Eight Grant Union players
contributed points for their win.
“Grant Union is a pretty
seasoned team,” said Prairie
City head coach Bo Workman.
“They showed us our weak-
nesses.”
Workman said his team
is looking forward to hosting
Monument/Dayville at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 6, in Prairie City,
and he expects an exciting
game.
Hallgarth said Prairie City
is a well-coached team, and
his team prepared to face the
Panthers’ two taller players,
Zweygardt and Cassie Hire.
“Once we made a couple
adjustments, we got in sync,”
Hallgarth said. “That’s the best
team ball we’ve played this
year.”
Wednesday, January 3, 2018
Moulton was happy with the
win.
“This game was when our
defense all clicked,” she said.
“Even though it was a nonleague
game, they still tested us.”
She said she’s looking for-
ward to good competition on
the road next week.
The Prospector girls will
face Weston-McEwen at 6 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 4, in Athena and
Lakeview at 4 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 6.
Hallgarth
expects
Weston-McEwen will play
quick in the game like his team,
and noted Lakeview, with a
couple tall girls, will be tough.
“If we keep playing like we
are, we can compete with a lot
of teams,” he said.

Panther boys
claw Badgers for
3-point win in
North Powder
The Prairie City Panther
boys went on the counterat-
tack in North Powder Thurs-
day, defeating the Powder
Valley Badgers 67-64.
It was a turning of the ta-
bles, after the Badger boys
beat the Panthers in over-
time 80-76 Dec. 19 in Prai-
rie City.
The Dec. 19 game was
especially sore because the
Panthers had a healthy lead
through the first half, at one
point up by 20.
Panther head coach Sam
Workman said this time the
Badgers had a 10-point lead
early in the game, and by the
half Prairie City was trailing
by just 1 point.
Workman said it was a
good game and his team
played a better fourth quar-
ter.
“They took care of the
ball better,” he said. “That
half-court trap — we prac-
ticed for it Wednesday, and
we were ready for it on
Thursday.”
Syd Holman led with 23
points for the Panthers, fol-
lowed by Dorran Wilson
with 19, Levi Burke with 16
and Lucas McKinley with 9.
“It was good to get back
at them at their place,” Burke
said. “It was good payback.”

girls blaze for
comeback in
Nyssa
The 2A Grant Union Pros-
pector girls showed resil-
ience after a 47-36 loss to the
4A La Grande Tigers Thurs-
day at the Dec. 21-23 Nys-
sa Christmas Tournament,
bouncing back for two wins.
The Lady Prospectors
blasted the 1A Harper Hor-
nets 91-17 on Friday and
followed up with a 44-39
victory over the 1A Adrian
Antelopes on Saturday.
Grant Union head coach
Casey Hallgarth said he
didn’t see a single let-down
from his team against Harper.
“We came out to play and
hit our shots right from the
start,” he said. “I am very
proud of our team for staying
consistent, and everyone got
a lot of valuable minutes.”
In a close contest with
the Antelopes, Grant Union
trailed in the first quarter, 17-
14 and was behind 23-22 go-
ing into the half.
The Lady Pros sprang out
on fire for the third, outshoot-
ing the Antelopes 10-2, mov-
ing forward for the win.
Hallgarth said the Ante-
lopes were a well-coached
and disciplined team. Seven
of Adrian’s players scored in
the game.
“I also thought our team
made some great adjustments
when we had to play man-to-
man most of the game,” he
said. “I’m very proud of the
way we are playing and com-
ing together.”
Prospector Madi McKro-
la hit her stride offensively
in Saturday’s game against
Adrian, leading the Grant
Union girls with 19 points.
Five other Prospec-
tors contributed points for
the win, including Kaylee
Wright, 10; Hailie Wright, 6
(two 3-point shots); Mariah
Wright, 4; Trinity Hutchison,
4; and Whitney McClellan, 1.

After the Prospectors
trailed 17-14 going into the
second quarter, Wright said
they switched up to a man-to-
man defense and “controlled
the game after that.” Grant
Union led 34-24 at the half.
Wright said Wilder had
some excellent shooters, but
they couldn’t compete with
Grant Union’s height and
speed.
The Prospector boys had
tougher contests in their re-
maining games.
Grant Union had a nar-
row loss to the 3A Nyssa
Bulldogs on Friday, 57-52.
They fell 76-57 to the 4A La
Grande Tigers on Saturday.
“We had some great com-
petition at this tournament,
and it helps us get ready for
our league,” Wright said.
“I was very proud of all
the boys and how hard they
played.”
He said his team was lim-
ited on players due to illness
and one for eligibility.
Grant Union has two road
games this week. The Pros-
pectors face Weston-McE-
wen in Athena on Thursday,
Jan. 4, the girls playing at 6
p.m., followed by the boys
at 7:30 p.m. They travel to

the
Monument/
Dayville teams
battle at Union
tournament
The 1A Monument/Day-
ville Tiger girls started off last
week’s Union Christmas Clas-
sic on a positive note with a
47-43 win over 2A Union.
They followed up with
two losses including 51-42 to
Council, Idaho, and a nail-bit-
er 33-32 contest to Crane.
“Overall, I was happy with
our performance from the tour-
nament,” said Tiger head coach
Taylor Schmadeka. “We gained
a lot of confidence in ourselves.”
Tiger player Kyla Emerson
led Monument/Dayville with
24 points in the match against
Union.
“We had some foul trouble
with four of our five starters
fouling out late in the game,
but our bench did a good job
finishing the game for us with
Faythe Schafer leading them,”
Schmadeka said. “The second
day was a hard battle.”
Schmadeka said Council
is a well-coached team with a
good point guard, and Danielle
Rhoda led the Tigers with 21
points.
League opponent Crane
gave Monument/Dayville an-
other tough challenge.
“It was a tough 1-point loss,
but I was proud of the girls for
battling back,” Schmadeka
said. “We only had 5 points in
the first half, so they came out
fighting in the second half.”
Tiger Aubrey Bowlus
brought down several re-
bounds and played tough de-
fense, the coach said.
“She also hit a 3 late in the
Crane game to get us a fighting
chance,” Schmadeka said.
The Tiger boys faced tough
competition, taking three
losses. They fell 66-26 to
Union on day one, followed
by a 72-35 loss to Cove and a
52-31 loss to Crane.

What I like best about my sport: “I like the
intensity. You’re always running, trying to get
the ball and shoot it.”
Coach’s Comment:
“Aubrey has improved a lot from last year and
plays tough down low against some tough
posts. She gets lots of rebounds
and does a lot of good work that
doesn’t always show up on the
stat books.”
