County kids aim high at the Elks Hoop Shoot

Grant County grade school hoop-
sters participated in the annual Elks
Kids Hoop Shoot Saturday, Dec. 9,
at Humbolt Elementary School in
Canyon City.
Out of a pool of 297 participants,
ages 8 to 13, in the preliminaries,
32 competed at Humbolt. Sinking
the most free-throw shots were
six winners, who will advance to
the Jan. 20 district championships
at Barnes Butte Grade School in
Prineville.
The John Day Elks Lodge No.
1824 sponsored the event.
“It was very successful,” said Elks
Hoop Shoot chairman Dan Driscoll.
He said several volunteers sup-
ported the event, helping with judg-
ing and score keeping. Humbolt
hosted the event and provided the
gym and all the equipment and sup-
plies, he said.
Advancing in the competition for
the girls are Paytin Girvin of Seneca
School in the age 8-9 division, Sa-
vannah Watterson of Humbolt Ele-
mentary (10-11) and Betty Ann Wil-
son of Prairie City School (12-13).
For the boys, Landyn Beil of
Humbolt in the 8-9 division, Cliff
Bice of Prairie City (10-11) and Tal-
on Van Cleave of Humbolt (12-13)
will advance.
Successful shooters at the district
competition will continue on to the
regional contest in Portland, and na-
tionals are held in Chicago.
“The Elks Lodge has held the
competition annually for many
years,” Driscoll said, adding he
appreciated the Grant County PE
teachers’ efforts and enthusiasm.
It has been an honor and pleasure to work with
you this past year. A heartfelt thank you for your
business and hope that the peace and spirit of
this special season shines brightly for you
throughout the coming year.
