Trails, boating, fishing and camping await outdoor

About 5 miles east of Prairie City on Highway 26, the covered wagon viewpoint commemorating the Oregon Trail
provides scenic views of the John Day Valley and displays with information on the area.
The Eagle/Rylan Boggs
The Painted Hills, one of three units in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, was
named one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon by Travel Oregon. The site is about 9 miles
northwest of the town of Mitchell, which is about 37 miles west of Dayville. The unit features
many short trails, from .25-1.6 miles, providing different perspectives of the red, yellow and
black clay hills.
