Three Grant County teams
compete at Baker Invite
Stiff competition between 28 schools at Friday’s Baker
Invite only brought out the best in Grant Union, Monument
and Prairie City track athletes.
That was especially true for the
2A Grant Union girls team, which
placed second with 87.5 points. Grant
Union head coach Sonna Smith said
she was pleased with the effort from
the girls team.
“We beat all of the 4A, 2A, and
1A teams,” she said. “The only 3A
team to beat us was Nyssa (102
points).”
Helping with the girls’ success
were the 4x100-meter relay team,
which bettered its time and placed
fi rst, and Reitta Wyllie who fi nished
second in the discus event with a
throw of 111-10, setting a personal
record.
“We are right on track to defend
our league title from last year,” Smith
said.
Monument’s track and fi eld team
attended three competitions last
week, ending with the Baker Invite.
“Our focus, of course, is now on districts, and all these
meets are leading up to next Friday,” said Monument head
coach Darrin Dailey.
For the Monument boys, Hayden Schafer, up against 64
competitors in the preliminaries, placed eighth in javelin fi -
nals (131-09) with just two 1A athletes ahead of him. He
set a personal record in shot put (39-08), placing 11th in the
preliminaries.
On the girls side for Monument, Sophie Pettit beat 46
competitors for fi rst in the 100-meter dash and was fourth
out of 42 in the 200. She was the top 1A athlete in the 200
race. She was also the top 1A athlete in the long jump, where
she placed sixth in the fi nals.
“As we’re winding down the season, the unity and sup-
port that our team exhibits continues to fi ll me with gladness
and pride that I get to work with such excellent athletes,”
Dailey said.
For the Prairie City girls, Haley Pfefferkorn set a person-
al record in the javelin preliminaries.
“She has been spending extra time after practice throw-
ing the javelin,” said Prairie City head coach Nate Barber.
“She has really pushed herself and these are the results.”
He added, “Friday is districts so it is nice to see that their
results are improving and we are starting to peak.”
Results from Grant County athletes will be posted at My-

Grant Union, later in the inning, loaded
the bases, bringing in a few more runs. Pros-
pector Ravyn Walker slid to third, scoring
Tressa Ranft and McClellan, and the fi rst
inning ended 8-0.
Elgin’s pitcher scored a single-run homer
in the second, but Moulton got the rest of the
outs, including a strikeout.
In the bottom of the inning, McClellan
had two RBI, scoring Natalie Stearns and
Ranft, and the Prospectors led 12-1.
Hitting doubles in the bottom of the
