EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Grant Union girl golfers place second at home tourney Allen, Stokes place third individually By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle The Grant Union Pros- pector girls golf team placed second at Friday’s GUHS Invitational held at the John Day Golf Club. This is the fi rst time in years that Grant Union has fi elded a full girls golf team. Prospector head coach Ron Lundbom said it was in the mid to late 1990s that the school last had a complete girls team. Seven teams attended the tournament with 70 boys and girls competing on the par 71 course. Grant Union’s Tia- na Allen helped with the team’s success, placing third individually among the girls at 114. Allen said it’s exciting to have a full varsity girls team. “We played pretty well overall,” she said. “It was fun to communicate with the other girls and see what the competition will be like for districts, see- ing what kind of chance we have against the other teams.” Prospector Duane Stokes placed third for the boys with an 86. Grant Union Prospector softball player Mariah Moulton put her stamp on game two of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Echo/Stanfi eld Cougars when she hit a walk-off, two-run homer for the 13-2 win. The Prospectors also won the fi rst game, 9-3, in the sweep at Seventh Street Com- plex in John Day. “We played a lot better in the fi rst game than the second, but overall getting a cou- ple wins, and hitting the ball that well ... we picked it up,” said Grant Union head coach DeAnna Nash. Grant Union’s Cody Jo Madden was in the circle for six innings in game one, with Moulton closing in the seventh inning. The Prospectors had 16 hits and two walks, and the Cougars had seven hits, with four batters striking out and one walk. “Overall, we hit well throughout the lineup and played sound defense,” Nash said. “Everyone who batted had at least one hit.” Ravyn Walker, Brianna Zweygardt, Ma- rissa Smith and Natalie Stearns each had two hits, and Hailie Wright had three hits. Walker had two doubles, and Zweygardt and Bailey Moss each had one double. In game two, the Prospectors and Cou- gars were tied 2-2 in the top of the fi fth. Grant Union gained offensive momentum in the bottom of the inning. After gaining fi ve runs, Grant Union loaded the bases, when Whitney McClel- lan hit a double, scoring Marissa Smith and Natalie Stearns. Then Moulton’s home run ended the game with the 10-run rule.
