The Prairie City Panther
boys had two solid wins last
week, securing the No. 2 spot
in the 1A High Desert League.
The Panthers have a bye
on Thursday as the High Des-
ert League Tournament gets
underway Thursday through
Saturday at the Grant Union
Junior-Senior High School in
John Day.
On Day One, the Monu-
ment/Dayville boys will face
Harper at 8:45 p.m. Thursday,
and Prairie City will compete
with the winner of that game
at 2:45 p.m. Friday.
The top seed in the league
is Jordan Valley, with Prairie
City second, Monument/Day-
ville third, Crane fourth, Adri-
an fi fth and Harper sixth.
The Panthers had a 78-24
home victory Friday over the
Harper Hornets for Prairie
City’s senior recognition night.
Instead of a tipoff, Harper
was at the free-throw line, as
Prairie City received a techni-
cal foul for entering the play-
ing area illegally.
Harper missed those shots,
but had the inbound throw to
start the action.
The Panthers blazed the
nets from the start, outshoot-
ing the Hornets 28-11 in the
fi rst quarter.

The Grant Union Lady Pros-
pectors emerged from a Saturday
showdown in Enterprise at the
top of the 2A Wapiti League.
The Grant Union girls claimed
a 34-33 victory over the Outlaws
in what was a nail-biter to the
very end.
“It was a very intense con-
test,” said Grant Union head
coach Mark Mosley.
The teams ran within several
points of each other throughout
the game, the Lady Pros taking a
15-10 lead at halftime.
The game came down to the
fourth quarter.
“We missed several free
throws that could have sealed
the game for us, but they found
other ways,” Mosley said.
“(Prospector) Madi McKrola
made a key offensive rebound at
the end of the game and pulled
the ball out.”
Grant Union kept possession
for the one-point win.
“Offensively, we did not play
extremely well, but the girls
found a way to grind it out,” Mos-
ley said. “I’m extremely proud of
them for the way they hung in
there. It was a great learning ex-
perience.”
Grant Union now travels to
the Wapiti District Tournament
scheduled for Friday and Satur-
day at Eastern Oregon University
in La Grande.
As the No. 1 seed, Grant
Union receives a bye on Friday,
and plays its fi rst game at 6 p.m.
Saturday.

Tiger boys claim
2 wins in 3-game series
The Monument/Dayville Tiger boys
had a busy schedule last week as they
prepare for the Thursday through Sat-
urday 1A-8 High Desert League Tour-
nament.
“It was good for our kids to get as
much court time as possible,” said Ti-
ger head coach Jeff Schafer. “They did
a good job. They worked as a team and
set us up well for districts.”
