Landowner seminars and annual meeting
• 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monument Senior Center
The Monument Soil and Water Conservation District
will host its 2017 landowner seminars and annual meet-
ing. Seminar topics include “Land Trusts and Working
Land Easements,” “Controlling Juniper with Herbicide”
and an overview of the Cavender Wetland Enhancement
project. At noon, Monument FFA members will serve
a fundraiser tri-tip lunch at a cost of $8 per plate. The
annual meeting will follow the landowner seminars at
2:30 pm. Those planning on attending the seminars and
lunch are asked to RSVP at 541-934-2141 or mswcd@

Grant County Little League Sign-ups
• 5-7:30 p.m., Humbolt Elementary, Canyon City
Sign-ups for Little League baseball and softball
players will be held in the computer lab at Humbolt El-
ementary. Players must have a birth certifi cate and three
proofs of residency to sign up. For more information,

Grant County Farm Bureau annual
meeting

The annual meeting will include presentations by
Shanna Northway of OSU Extension Offi ce on succes-
sion planning, internships and agro tourism and Jack
Southworth on Forest Service land management practic-
es, along with guest Steve Beverlin, Malheur National
Forest supervisor; the election of offi cers; and the goals
and direction of the Bureau for 2017.

Blue Mountain Hospice is sponsoring a
weekly grief support group.
Meetings will be held on Wednes-
days, starting Feb. 1, at the Ore-
gon Telephone Corporation Connec-
tions offi ce, 155 W. Main St. in John
Day.
There is no fee, and coffee and refresh-
ments will be provided.
Michelle Gibson, a home health and
hospice social worker, will lead the 12-
week class.
“Our goal is to offer a supportive
environment for people who are griev-
ing,” Gibson said. “It’s a supportive,
safe place to talk about grief and achieve
healing.”
Gibson said the group will learn from
each other and share what has helped them
get through diffi cult times, such as their
loved ones’ birthdays and holidays, and
they will also read segments from the book
“Understanding Your Grief” by Alan D.
Wolfelt, Ph.D.
Gibson, who’s been with Home Health
and Hospice for two years, said the class
is open to everyone, any age, even if their
loved one was not cared for through hospice
when they passed away.
There is no deadline to sign up for the
class, but it will be limited to 12 partici-

Community choir practice starts Feb. 7

Young and old can enjoy
participating in the upcoming
Youth Arts Program commu-
nity choirs.
Three groups will meet on
Tuesdays for 11 weeks, be-
ginning Feb. 7, in the Hum-
bolt Elementary School mu-
sic room in Canyon City.
Choir groups include ages
4-10, meeting 5-5:30 p.m.;
ages 8-12 from 5:20-5:45
p.m.; and ages 11 through
adult from 5:40-6:30 p.m.
Younger singers wishing
to join the 11-and-up group
may be asked to audition.
A dress rehearsal will be
scheduled, with a perfor-
mance set for Friday, April
28.
Directors are Rebecca
Bogardus of Dayville and
Janine Goodwin of Prairie
City, with accompaniment
provided by Samantha Floyd
of Canyon City.
The cost to participate is
$50 a person or $90 for each
family, and scholarships are
available.
This is the nonprof-
it choir’s third season, and
the program is under the di-
rection of the Juniper Arts
Council.

Fundraiser planned for Burns teen who died in wreck

A fundraiser for the family of John
Barry Rose, a 15-year-old boy who died
in an automobile accident near Burns in
the fall, is planned Feb. 11 in Prineville.
The fundraiser will help offset medi-
cal expenses and go toward establishing
a scholarship in memory of John Barry.
The event kicks off at 5 p.m. and in-
cludes a tri-tip dinner, silent and live
auctions and live music. Dinner is $25
(not required to attend), and tickets can
be purchased in advance. A limited num-
ber of tickets will be available at the
event.
