O BITUARIES
Elton Dale Nesselrodt
Jan. 15, 1960 - Dec. 22, 2016
Elton Dale Nesselrodt, 56, passed
away Dec. 22, 2016, at St. Alphonsus
hospital in Boise, Idaho. He had been
on dialysis for kidney failure and in
declining health for the last few years.
Nesselrodt was born Jan. 15,
1960, in Prairie City. He attended
schools in Mt. Vernon and Long
Creek, graduating with the class of
1978 at Long Creek High School. He
continued his education at Blue Mountain Community Col-
lege and earned his associate degree in photography.
After graduation, he went into photography and writing for
a number of years. He enjoyed books and had a used book
business. He also enjoyed attending a weekly auction and
yard sales. Nesselrodt became the volunteer chaplain at min-
imum security prisons outside of Boise, something that was
very important to him.
Previously married to Patricia Frantum and Crystal Samples,
he married Cheryl Essay on June 11, 2005. During their marriage
they took a trip to connect with his Nesselrodt heritage in Virginia
and West Virginia, which had special meaning for him.
Nesselrodt is survived by his wife, Cheryl, Boise; moth-
er, Valores Hall, Long Creek; stepmother, Sally Nesselrodt,
Hermiston; sister Beverly; stepdaughters Alisha and Joanie;
one niece; three nephews; aunt Valerie Rush; and cousins. He
was preceded in death by his father, Elmer; stepfather, Brooks
Hall; sister Retha; and nephew Dale Larkin.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Leslie ‘Hap’ McLeod
Feb. 19, 1938 - Jan. 15, 2017
Leslie “Hap” McLeod, 78, of Mt.
Vernon passed away Sunday, Jan. 15,
at Valley View Assisted Living facility
in John Day. Per his request, no public
services will be held.
McLeod was born on Feb. 19, 1938,
in Bandon to Leslie Carlson and Geor-
gia Jane (Cox) McLeod. He served in
the Navy, then spent his career driving
truck. He came to Grant County after
retiring.
He enjoyed hunting, fi shing and playing banjo.

Jack Eldon Cavender, 96, of Monument passed away
Monday, Jan. 16, at his home surrounded by family. A fu-
neral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at
the Monument Church with a reception following at the

Margaret Leonora Shervey
Margaret Leonora Shervey, 93, of Eugene passed away
Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Riverpark nursing home. Shervey and
her husband, Earl, retired to John Day in 1990. She will be
remembered during the 10 a.m. service Sunday, Jan. 22, at
Pleasant Hill Lutheran Church.
Local students will be
making up classes canceled
due to the snow.
Grant School District
No. 3 Superintendent Curt
Shelley announced an extra
school day Friday, March
10, to make up for the school
closure the district had in
December before the win-
ter break due to inclement
weather.
The extra day will be for
Grant Union Junior-Senior
High, Humbolt Elementary
and Seneca schools.
“We must complete a
minimum number of seat
hours to fulfill state re-
quirements,” he said. “For-
tunately, we had indicat-
ed a proposed date on the
2016-2017 adopted calen-
dar in preparation for an
emergency school closure.
Friday March 10, 2017,
will now become a regular
school day to replace lost
seat time. We hope this the
only adjustment that will
be necessary.”
Daville School District
16J also has an extra day of
school planned for Friday,
Jan. 27, to make up for time
missed due to emergency
closures.
The Dayville School
Talent Show, which was
canceled in December be-
cause of inclement weather,
has been reset for 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the
school.
