Prairie City, Oregon
Summit Creek Landscape Restoration Project
The Summit Creek Landscape Restoration Project (“project”)
Preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) is now available
for public review and comment. The Malheur National Forest
is proposing a suite of actions to improve the ecological
structure and function of forest ecosystems; restore riparian
vegetation, including aspen and other hardwood vegetation;
reduce fuel loading and fire hazard across the landscape;
and reduce road-related impacts on approximately 38,000
acres of National Forest System lands. Activities proposed
would include commercial harvest, pre-commercial and
non-commercial thinning, underburning, road closures and
decommissioning, and wildlife habitat enhancements. These
actions are proposed on the Prairie City Ranger District,
approximately 20 miles southeast of Prairie City, Oregon.
The project is located a few miles south of the Strawberry
Wilderness, and is bounded by the recently completed
Elk 16 Landscape Restoration Project to the east, Logan
Valley to the west, and the Emigrant Creek Ranger District
boundary to the south. Grant County Road 62 and
Forest Service Road 16 pass through the project area.
Subwatersheds include Bosonberg Creek-Malheur River and
Summit Creek.
The preliminary EA can be accessed on the Forest Service
website at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=42450.
A copy of the document and/or additional project
information can be obtained by contacting Amy Mathis
(Natural Resource Planner) at the Prairie City Ranger District,
P.O. Box 337, 327 SW Front St., Prairie City, OR 97869, 541-

Written, facsimile (FAX), hand-delivered, and electronic
comments concerning this action will be accepted for 30
calendar days following publication of this notice in the
Blue Mountain Eagle, John Day, Oregon, the newspaper of
record for the Prairie City Ranger District. The publication
date in the newspaper of record is the exclusive means for
calculating the comment period for this proposal. Those
wishing to comment should not rely on dates or timeframe
information provided by any other source.

Official for this project. Written comments concerning
the project must be submitted to: District Ranger Joseph
Rausch, c/o Amy Mathis, Prairie City Ranger District, P.O.
Box 337, 327 SW Front St., Prairie City, OR 97869 or FAX
comments to: 541-820-4844. Hand-delivered comments
must be submitted during business hours, 8:00 a.m. to
4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
Written comments shall include your name, address, and
(if possible) telephone number and/or email address,
organization represented if any, title of document on which
the comment is being submitted, and specific facts or
comments along with supporting reasons that you believe
the Responsible Official should consider in reaching a
decision. Email electronic comments to: comments-
pacificnorthwest-malheur-prairiecity@fs.fed.us in a format
such as plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), Word (.doc),
or portable document format (.pdf). For electronically
mailed comments, the sender should normally receive an
automated electronic acknowledgement from the agency
as confirmation of receipt. If the sender does not receive an
automated acknowledgment of the receipt of the comment,
it is the sender’s responsibility to ensure timely receipt by
other means. Emails submitted to e-mail addresses other
than the one listed above, or those containing viruses, will
be rejected. Names and contact information submitted with
comments will become part of the public record and may be
released under the Freedom of Information Act.
The proposed project is subject to the objection process
pursuant to 36 CFR part 218, and individuals and
organizations wishing to be eligible to object in the future
must meet the information requirements listed in 36 CFR
218.5 (who may file an objection) and 218.8 (filing an
objection). Only those who submit timely and specific written
comments regarding the proposed project or activity during
a designated opportunity for public comment established by
the responsible official are eligible to file an objection. For
objection eligibility each individual or representative from
each entity must either sign the comments or verify identity
