JOHN DAY — Nov. 28
was a really cold day, and
we only had about 20 diners
in the center. It was a great
breakfast for lunch.
We had French toast stra-
ta, golden hashbrowns, ba-
con and fresh cantaloupe.
Ineta Carpenter and Dar-
lene Nodine, representing
The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, deliv-
ered 24 meals and 29 frozen
meals to shut-ins.
They also served our
lunch. Darlene led the flag
salute, and Ineta asked the
blessing. At the desk were
Merrie Henry and David
Pasko. The kitchen wants to
extend a heartfelt thank you
to the John Day Elks Club
for its nice donation.
Our pie social will be
held Dec. 15. Billie Bull-
ard won the Len’s Drug gift
card, and the free meal for
two at Valley View went to
Jill Reeves.
I thought I was in the
wrong place when I got to
the senior center Thursday,
Dec. 1. The building was
full of young people. Turns
out they were part of the Re-
gional Job Club.
There were kids from
Long Creek, Prairie City,
Baker City area and Burns.
They had a short meet-
ing and then were to visit
restaurants around town.
These are kids from rural
areas who are interested in
vocational training. They
take a field trip once a quar-
ter to visit businesses they
might find future employ-
ment with. Today’s focus
was on the food industry.
Marnie Mediger was in
charge of the Prairie City
group and arranged for them
to serve Thursday’s lunch to
us. They did an excellent
job serving and cleaning up
afterward — a very polite
and respectful group.
Bonnie Kocis and Mar-
garet Glass greeted us at the
desk.
Veanne introduced Mar-
nie and Lon Thornburg, the
regional coordinator for the
Job Club.
Jonathan Lawrence led
the flag salute. Veanne re-
minded us there will be a
pie social on Dec. 15 so re-
member to bring a dessert to
share. We had two Decem-
ber birthdays in the house,
Norm Strawn and Bill Cho-
ate.
Both gentlemen are in
their 80s, and both are vet-
erans.
We would like to say
thank you to Driskill Me-
morial Chapel for the birth-
day cake we had for dessert.
The Site Council is looking
for two more members. See
Ron Dowse or anyone at the
front desk if you are inter-
ested.
The Valley View lunch
for two went to Don Porter
and the Chester’s Thriftway
gift certificate to Bonnie
Pickle.
We had baked cod in
cream sauce, baked pota-
toes, sweet and sour peas
and wheat rolls. Everyone
seemed to really enjoy the
fish; there was none left
over.
Thursday, Dec. 8, the
cooks are serving baked
chicken, and Monday, Dec.
12, will be hot turkey sand-
wiches.

MONUMENT — Are we
having a cold snap or what?
The weather here in
Monument has changed
drastically, almost over-
night it seems. I don’t know
about the rest of the coun-
try (I don’t have TV), but
over here, it is pretty chilly.
I have been enjoying being
indoors and relaxing, yes,
most splendidly I might
add, except when I have to
go outside to do chores and
walk the dogs.
Christmas is just around
the corner. I hope I can get
my cards made and sent out
in time. Hmm, wishful think-
ing probably.
I still have to decorate an
outside tree with my kids. It
will be something fun to do.
So, our last meal of the
month of November was
cooked up by our cooks Ter-
ry Cade and Carrie Jewell. It
was delicious baked chicken,
mashed potatoes and gravy,
dinner rolls with butter, fresh
tossed green salad and lemon
birthday cake.
My tummy was very
happy and satisfied. We
had our three greeters, Bob
Blakeslee, Bodean Andersen
and Marva Walker. Bob led
our flag salute, and Bodean
made the announcements and
prayed the blessing over our
meal. We had 40 guests on
our books and one takeout.
We want to welcome back
Terry Bowlus from her visit
in Alaska.
Bob Blakeslee won the
Len’s Drug gift card. Sylvia
Cockerell won the gift card
to Chester’s Thriftway. The
turkey raffle for the day was
won by Aaron Harris. Evonne
Baughman won the free meal
for two from Valley View.
Don’t forget about sewing
class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 10. Bring
your sewing machine and a
dish to share for the potluck
and sew away.
The Monument Christmas
Bazaar will be taking place
on Dec. 11, so mark your
calendars. If you would like
to set up a booth to sell any
goods, please contact Staci
Cox.
I really need to get rid of
my three billy goats. They
are just obnoxious and es-
cape artists. I’m beginning
to really, really, really hate
them.
I went down the hill the
other day to feed them, and
where were they? They were
down the road and being
pests. Last time they were out
of the fence and on the road, I
had the dogs chase them back
in. All would have been fine
except, unfortunately, the
dogs bit Mama because she
was lollygagging.
I had to shock them to stop
and then I bit their ears until
they yelped. Yes, you read
that right. My neighbor told
me to do that to show that
I’m the boss and it did work.
It made my other dog tremble
when I stared him down. Ha.
Did Mama learn not to get
out? Not a chance. Seriously,
the 100 acres just isn’t good
enough for them, they just
have to eat the grass outside
of the fence and along the
road?
The battle of wills con-
tinues, I think I’m losing.
Psalm 118:8 “It is better
to trust in the LORD than to
put confidence in man.”

PRAIRIE CITY — Brrrr.
Winter is coming. And lots
of folks decided to hunker
down by the warm fire, I
assume, because there were
only 55 names on the reg-
istration book. And we had
a good warm-your-innards
meal for you, too. Hope to
see you next time.
Son No. 1 and family
made it over for Thanks-
giving. They slept up at the
“fake grandparents” in Bear
Valley, so that worked out
good for us all. When they
were ready for a respite, the
children were ready to come
down to our little house. And
by the time we were ready for
some peace and quiet, they
were ready to go back to their
sleeping quarters. Remem-
ber, it takes a village?
See that the Christmas elf
has been busy in the center.
There are Christmas deco-
rations up and special table
covers on. We did a “land
office” business over the
Christmas on the Prairie
weekend, with the store,
vendors, food and silent
auction proceeds. Almost
enough to pay for a year’s
worth of insurance. Thanks
so much to all who had a part
in that. I didn’t have much
to do with any activities due
to Derrol’s semi-emergency
surgery on Nov. 17 in Bend.
By the time we made it home
on Friday, I was a wipeout for
any shopping on Saturday.
But it looked like lots of
other people were having a
good time. There were no
parking places available on
Front Street when I ventured
out to the Post Office Satur-
day morning. Wow.
Buzz, Ken, Larry and
Carlos made home deliver-
ies; Buzz led the flag salute;
Jack asked the blessing; and
I did the announcing be-
cause of the absence of both
Harold and Bruce on “mis-
sions of mercy.” Today was
December birthday recogni-
tion, and I could only find
two people for our drawing
for the $10 in trade donat-
ed by Huffman’s Market:
Ginger Kendall and Carlos
Bortell. And Carlos won the
gift certificate. Betty Elliott
was the winner of the $5
in trade donated by Prairie
Hardware & Gift.
Our warm meal had ap-
ple juice, sausage tortellini
soup, herb bread, green sal-
ad and Christmas cranber-
ry cake. We want to thank
Chip and the food bank for
the donation of the macaroni
for the soup.
The nominating commit-
tee is out and about, so if you
are visited by one of them,
be nice. We appreciate their
service, too.
Lorna
and
Krystin
brought Otho Laurance, Lois
Hill, Marilyn Randall and
Dorothy Blasing from the
Blue Care Mountain Center.
You saw the big story
about our Senior Store being
open in the afternoon all this
month, so come on out and
get a great gift for your fam-
ily and friends while helping
our program make ends meet.
Matthew 2:11 “... Then
they opened their treasures
and presented Him with
gifts of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh.” Rom. 6:23 “...
but the gift of God is eter-
nal life through Jesus Christ
our Lord.”
