taining the names Squaw
Creek and Squaw Meadow
for the two features near the
Grant-Baker county line. The
county submitted proposals
to change those names to Sul-
lens Creek and Sullens Mead-
ow June 8.
In the recent letter denying
the Sullens proposals, Yost
said the board considered
the proposals before denying
them.
“The BGN briefly dis-
cussed the proposals for Sul-
lens Creek and Sullens Mead-
ow at its July 14th meeting,
and again in more detail at its
August 11th and October 13th
meetings,” Yost said in the let-
ter. “At the October meeting,
the BGN voted unanimous-
ly to not accept the propos-
als since the Grant County
Court’s recommendation at
the time of the BGN’s April
14th decisions was to retain
the names Squaw Creek and
Squaw Meadow, and because
the County submitted the new
proposals after the decisions
had already been made.”
Britton, the commissioner
who led the county’s effort
to propose names intended to
be more authentic to the loca-
tions and easier to pronounce
for the majority of the local
population, said he was disap-
pointed with the board’s deci-
sion and the “tone” of Yost’s
letter.
Public Forest
Commission members
continue to urge
appeal of nullification
By Rylan Boggs
Blue Mountain Eagle
People who were elected to
the Public Forest Commission
continue to urge Grant Coun-
ty to appeal the circuit court
opinion to nullify the measure
that created the commission.
Grant County Circuit
Court Judge William D. Cra-
mer Jr. ruled the measure cre-
ating the commission should
not have been placed on the
ballot in 2002 because the
measure sought to assume
control of public lands in the
county, which conflicts with
paramount state and federal
law.
At the Grant County Court
meeting Wednesday, Nov. 23,
elected forest commissioner
Jim Sproul informed the au-
dience of a letter he sent to
county court members, stat-
ing, “To the county court con-
cerning the Cramer decision
on Grant County Forest Com-
mission. Constructive notice
is hereby given that the Grant
County Court shall appeal
the circuit court decision on
nullifying the Public Forest
Commission on behalf of the
Grant County Public Forest
Commission and the affected
citizens of Grant County.”
County Judge Scott Myers
said he sent the letter to the
county’s legal counsel, Ron
Yockim, for review. He said
no action would be taken until
Yockim responded.
Commissioner
Chris
Labhart reiterated his stance
against the appeal.
