Do courts care
when the people
speak?
To the Editor:
The Grant County
Court is not listening to
the people of Grant Coun-
ty! The people voted that
they did not want marijua-
na in this county, but now
the court has taken it upon
themselves to allow med-
ical marijuana businesses
in. When the people speak,
doesn’t it mean anything to
this court? It’s just like the
people spoke and said they
wanted a Public Forest
Commission by a big ma-
jority but the courthouse,
the circuit court and Blue
Mountains Forest Partners
after all these years decid-
ed that it was interfering
with their agenda so they
now declare it does not ex-
ist. How can they do that?
It is against the will of the
people. Mark Webb and
King Williams were run-
ning for the Public Forest
Commission and lost big
time, so the solution was
to get the circuit court to
declare the Public Forest
Commission does not ex-
ist anymore. And, for the
record, I made the motion
for a vote of no confidence
in the service of King Wil-
liams on the Public Forest
Commission, and it passed
by a vote of 5-to-2. When
King Williams was run-
ning for the Public Forest
Commission this spring,
we let the people of Grant
County know that the
commission had voted a
vote of no confidence in
his service. They spoke
soundly in favor of the
vote of no confidence. Un-
til I get notification from
the circuit court, I am re-
maining a Public Forest
Commissioner, if they
have the guts to notify me.
Until then, I remain a pub-
lic servant to the people of
Grant County. Have a nice
day.

William D. Cramer Jr., the

which created the Public
Forest Commission, con-
flicted with paramount
state and federal law, so
he nullified the measure.
In court, Ron Yockim,
Grant County’s attorney,
defended the Public For-
est Commission, arguing
the measure was intended
to create a commission to
manage the land only if it
was eventually transferred
to the county.
State laws
should apply
statewide
To the Editor:
This past week, with my
husband and some friends,
I visited Grant County to
hike and visit the wonder-
ful Kam Wah Chung State
Park and National Historic
Landmark. I was distressed
to learn that county resi-
dents, whom I spoke with,
are fearful of the actions
and threats by some of the
sheriff’s supporters and
volunteer deputies, against
those who support Palmer’s
opponent in the upcoming
election. When I returned
home I read all that I could
fi nd about Sheriff Glenn
Palmer and his law en-
forcement practices in the
county. As an Oregonian,
and a visitor to this county,
I would like to think that
the laws of our state ap-
ply and are upheld equally
throughout the state, but the
Grant County sheriff makes
his own rules. On previous
visits to this county, I have
enjoyed Clyde Holliday
State Park and the Sheep
Rock Unit of the John Day
Fossil Beds National Mon-
ument. That these treasures
are within the jurisdiction
of a sheriff that does not
agree with the federal and
state laws that are his job to
uphold is a scary scenario.
I hope with the resolution
of the DOJ action and the
completion of the admin-
istrative review, that the
sheriff’s own rules will be
found unlawful. I want to
return to Grant County in
August for the eclipse, but
will not do so unless these
pending legal actions are
resolved in a way that lets
me feel comfortable that the
laws of our state are being
enforced.
