Bruce Wayne Campbell
July 22, 1954 - Sept. 28, 2016
Bruce Wayne Campbell, 62, passed
away Sept. 28 at Partners in Care Hos-
pice House in Bend. A memorial ser-
vice and dessert potluck will be held
at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Elks
Lodge.
Campbell was born at Fairchild Air
Force Base in Spokane, Washington,
on July 22, 1954, to Ted Campbell and
Janette Frost Jarvis.
He was raised in Harney and Grant
counties. He spent many years in Seneca, where he worked for
Edward Hines Lumber Company. He graduated from Grant
Union High School in John Day in 1972. He went on to attend
Mt. Hood Community College, where he received an associate
degree in communications.
He spent most of his life working in construction with Jarvis
Excavating and later with Emery and Sons, operating and haul-
ing heavy equipment.
In 2002 he had a daughter, Brooke, with Tracy Spaght.
Brooke was his pride and joy, and she lived with him for the
last four years. He never missed a school function or sporting
event she was involved in.
Campbell enjoyed many hunting trips with his family. He
was an avid pool player. He enjoyed many years of playing at
the Pink Elephant in Salem, where he resided for 25 years. He
was also a proud member of the Wrecking Crew every year at
the St. Paul Rodeo. He seemed to have an extended “family”
everywhere he frequented.
He leaves behind his daughter Brooke; mother and father;
brother Brad Campbell; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces,
nephews and many, many friends.
He is preceded in death by his Harney County pioneer grand-
parents, Ed and Ruth Campbell and Gerald and Lois Frost, and
his sister-in-law and dear friend Pam Davis Campbell.
Memorial contributions may be made to a college fund es-
tablished for Brooke Campbell in care of Brad Campbell at
Wells Fargo.
Juniper Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of the arrange-
ments.

John Day resident Jim Spell
has deployed with the Red
Cross to help relief efforts in
communities affected by Hurri-
cane Matthew.
Spell and 28 other respond-
ers from the Cascades Region
will travel to affected areas
to distribute food and relief
items like blankets and clean
up kits. The other responders
are from Portland, Beaver-
ton, Junction City, Keizer,
Blodgett, Roseburg, Medford,
Salem and Bend, Oregon, and
Vancouver, Washington, and
will assist those in the Caro-
linas, Georgia and Florida, ac-
cording to a Red Cross press
release.
“Our local responders from
Oregon and Southwest Wash-
ington are focused on keeping
people safe and getting them
the help they need,” said Amy
Shlossman, CEO of the Red
Cross Cascades Region. “With-
out our trained volunteers, who
make up more than 90 percent
of our disaster workforce, these
relief efforts would not be pos-
sible. Thanks to our generous
local donors, we can be ready
to help people anytime and
anywhere.”
It costs the Red Cross ap-
proximately $1,650 to send a
disaster responder to a relief op-
eration for the average length of
a disaster deployment, 11 days.
This includes travel, transporta-
tion, lodging, food and support
systems.
The Red Cross depends on

relief. Help people affected by
Hurricane Matthew by visiting
redcross.org or calling 1-800-
RED CROSS to make a dona-
tion. Donations enable the Red
Cross prepare for, respond to
and help people recover from
this disaster.
Chester Allyn ‘Chet’ Bennett Jr.
Jan. 6, 1932 - Sept. 26, 2016
Chester Allyn “Chet” Bennett Jr., 84,
of Hermiston died of heart failure on
Sept. 26, while vacationing in Pine Top,
Arizona. A memorial service will be held
at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Herm-
iston Elks Lodge, 480 E. Main Street,
Hermiston, OR 97838.
Born Jan. 6, 1932, in Corvallis, he
was the oldest of three sons of Chester A.
Bennett Sr. and Ruby Hinds. His mother
died while he was a young boy, but his
father later married Ruby Farlow, and the family was joined by an-
other brother, Robert. As a Forest Service family, Bennett spent his
childhood years in Paisley, Bly, John Day and Enterprise, where he
graduated from high school in 1949.
Bennett attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande for one
year before enlisting in the U.S. Army at the outset of the Korean
War in 1950. He served in a combat engineer battalion during the
war and at Ft. Carson, Colorado, after returning home. He resumed
his education at Oregon State College using his GI Bill benefi ts,
while continuing to serve in the Army Reserve where he attained
the rank of Sergeant First Class.
Bennett married Joan Finlayson of Eugene in 1956, while both
were still in college. Their son Donald Allyn was born the next year
in Corvallis, and son Jon Robert born in Eugene in 1961. He and
Joan were married 47 years until her death in 2003.
Bennett graduated from the School of Forestry at Oregon State
with his baccalaureate degree in 1958 and began his professional
career with the U.S. Forest Service after spending summers during
college on trail building and fi refi ghting crews. First assigned to
the Willamette National Forest in Oakridge, Bennett moved his
young family to John Day in 1962 where he worked in various po-
sitions on the Malheur National Forest until his retirement in 1988.
During his long career, he was a leader of local and state chapters
of the National Federation of Federal Employees. He then worked
a number of years as a school bus driver for Grant School District
No. 3 and served as president of the classifi ed employees union.
In John Day, Bennett was constantly involved in his church
and community and especially his sons’ activities as Little League
baseball coach, Boy Scout leader, swim team and Grant Union
booster clubs and adviser to DeMolay and Rainbow chapters. An
avid deer and elk hunter, Bennett looked forward to fall hunting
seasons each year and some of his favorite times were days in the
woods with his sons and hunting partners.
Bennett was recently recognized as a 50-year member of John
Day Elks Lodge No. 1824, where he was a past exalted ruler. He
also served as district deputy for the Southeast District of the Or-
egon State Elks Association. He was particularly involved in Elks
ritual competitions as a team coach and judge. In 2001, he was
named to the OSEA Hall of Fame for his many years of service.
Bennett was also a past master of Canyon City Lodge No. 34, A.F.
& A.M., and a 32° member of Baker Valley Scottish Rite. Bennett
served on the board of directors of Old West Federal Credit Union
for 35 years, beginning with the Grant County Credit Union and
continuing on the board through the series of mergers that created
Old West.
In 2006, Chet married Kay Burns of Hermiston, and they en-
joyed 10 years of world travel, adventures and loving togetherness.
They volunteered several years for the Columbia River Cowboy
Gathering & Music Festival and attended other music and arts
events throughout the region.
Bennett is survived by his wife, Kay; son Jon (Laura) of Grants
Pass; son Don (Anne) of Puyallup, Washington; granddaughters
Rita (Daniel) Bennett Adams of Eatonville, Washington, and Car-
la Bennett of Bronxville, New York; stepdaughter Heather (Nick)
Powers and their children, Elizabeth and Connor, of Newburg;
brothers Bill (Martha) of Wilsonville, and Jim (Edna) of Raleigh,
North Carolina.
Charitable contributions in memory of Bennett may be made
