Kodesh sentenced to eight months in jail for shooting

stemming from a shooting in
John Day July 2.
Kodesh pleaded guilty to
third-degree assault, a Class C
felony, and menacing, a Class
A misdemeanor, July 27 in
Grant County Circuit Court.

charge. He sen-
tenced Kodesh to 18 months
of supervised probation and
60 hours of community ser-
vice for the misdemeanor.
Kodesh owes $700 in ines
and attorney fees.
A charge of unlawful use
of a weapon against another
and a charge of second-degree
disorderly conduct were dis-
missed.
John Day Police Sergeant
Damon Rand said Kodesh
was reportedly arguing with
Mathew Walker, 32, of John
Day on the evening of July
2 in the alleyway behind
Chester’s Thriftway in John
Day when the shooting hap-
pened.
Walker was treated and
released from Blue Mountain
Hospital for a gunshot wound
to the upper arm.
Kodesh was arrested in
Prairie City the afternoon of
July 3.
In a separate case, Walker
was also arrested the after-
noon of July 3 in John Day
and charged with a parole vio-
lation and possession of meth-
amphetamine.

Connection
to hold
hearing on
Senior Needs
Assessment

Community Connection
of Northeast Oregon, Inc.,
will host a public hearing to
present the results of its Se-
nior Needs Assessment at
noon Aug. 10 at the Prairie
City Senior Center, 204 N.
McHaley. After the presen-
tation, comments will be
accepted on the results of
the Needs Assessment and
Area Plan. The Area Plan is
an overview of senior ser-
vices that Community Con-
nection provides and the
service delivery systems
for the next four years.
Community members are
encouraged to attend and
provide feedback to help
improve senior programs
in Grant County during the
2017-2021 period.

Chief petitioner Cindy
Kidd oficially withdrew her
initiative petition July 26.
The reasons she gave
for the withdrawal: “1.
Time frame won’t work. 2.
Loss of a family member.
3. Going to do this in May
of 2017.”
The title of the petition
was “Regulation of mari-
juana for economic devel-
opment and youth protec-
tion.”
JD residents will not need permit to rent rooms for eclipse
Blue Mountain Eagle
John Day City Council mem-
bers opted not to require permits
for people renting rooms in their
homes during the solar eclipse.
City Manager Nick Green
said requiring special permits
would likely require home in-
spections. He said the council
voted unanimously against re-
quiring the special permits for
room rentals at the July 26 regu-
lar City Council meeting.
Green said temporary use
permits will still be required for
people selling concessions. Peo-
ple interested in learning more
about any permits required can
contact City Hall at 541-575-
0028. The July 26 meeting was
the irst John Day City Council
meeting in its new location at
the ire hall.
