JOHN DAY — On July 18,
we had Chinese food, which
consisted of sweet and sour
pork, rice, moo goo gai pan
style veggies with Chinese noo-
dles, lemon parfait and fortune
cookies. There were approx-
imately 32 diners present for
lunch, and Rick Rhinehart and
Pastor Al Altnow delivered 31
meals and, with Veanne Wed-
dle’s help, another 31 frozen
ones to shut-ins.
Marianne Morris and Ron
Dowse greeted us, and our
servers were from First Chris-
tian Church. Ron led the lag
salute, and Cathy Altnow
asked the blessing. Ron, Cathy
and Karen Barrietua served the
meal and did the clean up.
There is a tentative plan
for a fundraiser here at the
center on Aug. 20. It will be
a spaghetti feed put on by the
Grant County Ministrial Asso-
ciation and will be used for lo-
cal needs. We also found out it
was Merrie Henry’s birthday.
Our guests that day were
Shelly Whale and Cindy Ka-
lin, representing Heart of
Grant County.
Cathy Altnow won the
Len’s Drug gift certiicate, and
Shelly won the free meal.
On July 21, we had Christ-
mas in July. There were ap-
proximately 84 diners at the
center for a lunch of turkey,
dressing, mashed potatoes,
gravy, glazed carrots, cranber-
ry sauce, dinner rolls and Oreo
cheesecake for dessert. There
were also 41 lunches delivered
by Dennis and Linda Dick-
ensen.
The entree was furnished
by the Redeemer Lutheran
Church, and they were well
represented.
David Pasko and Merrie
Henry greeted us, while mem-
bers of the United Methodist
Church served our meal. Those
members were Jean Willey,
Sherry Fieger, Isa Larkin, Lou-
ise Nelson, Denise Seebart and
Roxie Lissman. Jean led the
lag salute, and Sherry asked
the blessing.
Veanne announced the Site
Council is short two mem-
bers. If you would like to help
them out, contact Ron Dowse
at 541-575-4268 or 541-792-
0587. There will be represen-
tatives here to help you with
Medicare 101 from 10 a.m. to
noon on Aug. 15. Santa Claus
also made an appearance,
which made me very excited!
He reminded us there were only
157 days left until Christmas.
He also presented Linda Stoltz
with a gift and a certiicate of
appreciation for all she does
for the seniors. Here’s who got
all the Santa gifts: myself, Bill
Toop, Ian Ellison, Bill M., Wan-
da Kaufman, Louise Nelson,
Joe Phipps, Corrine Stinnett,
Margaret Glass, Red Lelans,
Jerry Sheets, Hank Lissman,
Lenora Thomason, Donna Ry-
nearson, Evelyn Ogilvie, David
Pasko, Kris Labhart. Sorry if
I missed anyone. Santa drew
names pretty fast.
Tasha Lewis won the Ches-
ter’s Thriftway gift certiicate,
and Helen Bogart won the Val-
ley View lunch for two.
It was good to see Shay’s
wife and daughter, along with
Anna Hartwick.
On Thursday, July 28, we
will have bacon wrapped meat-
loaf, cottage fries, veggies,
bread and butter and dump
cake. On Monday, Aug. 1, we
will have pulled pork sand-
wiches and macaroni salad.

PRAIRIE CITY — Now
you know that the reason there
are Senior Centers around
is so that the “seniors” will
have access to a hot meal at
least once a week for a nomi-
nal price. And the way to get
a good meal is to have good
cooks. So you want to keep
the cooks happy. One way is
to provide good working con-
ditions with proper equipment
so that they can do their jobs
quickly and eficiently. An-
other way is to make the envi-
ronment temperate — cool in
the summer and warm in the
winter. We have a heater in
the kitchen and now — inal-
ly — an air conditioner, too.
Thanks so much to those who
took it upon themselves to get
the unit and put it in. You get
an extra dessert!
July 20 was the irst day
our “Senior Store” was open
for business. It has a good se-
lection of items, so come on
down and browse. Frances
will make you a good deal. In
addition to the merchandise,
there is also a good selection
of food items donated by the
Food Bank. Thanks, Chip.
Nancy Viggers was joined
by her son, his wife and son
and sister-in-law. Also attend-
ing were Ray and Barbara
Chapman from Forest Grove,
who are friends with Jack and
Pat (Galbreath) Howard. Lor-
na and Kristin brought Otho
Laurance, Lois Hill, Marilyn
Randall, Helen Ricco and
Dorothy Blasing from Blue
Mountain Care Center.
Larry, Tom, Jim and Buzz
took care of the home deliver-
ies. Gary and Julia passed out
milk and juice. Buzz led the
lag salute, and Jack Retherford
asked the blessing. We had 85
names on the registration book.
Lois Bidasolo won the gift
certiicate to Chuck’s Little
Diner, Bob Meador won the
gift certiicate to Prairie Hard-
ware and Gifts and the 50/50
winner was “Chairman” Har-
old — who put it back in the
general fund, too.
Our meal was tacos along
with potatoes, orange juice,
broccoli salad and peanut but-
ter pie. Good stuff.
I ended up at the registra-
tion desk so that Pam could
go help Iva and Linda in the
kitchen because Helen had to
make the long trip to Idaho to
see her eye specialist. Phew.
Glad I don’t have to diagram
that sentence.
We’ve started the process
to get authorization so Derrol
can have surgery on his neck
vertebrae. The cushioning
has all been eaten away by
arthritis so it is bone-on-bone
which is very painful. The
plan is to go in and jack apart
the vertebrae and put a shim
in between them. The doctor
said that he would be taller
after the operation. He has
shrunk two inches in the last
16 years, but I don’t expect
he’ll gain that all back. One
worrisome thing that could
happen is that he could lose
his voice, so we are praying
that that won’t occur.
Got your fair entries ready?
We have the joy of watching a
couple of 4-H kids walk their
pigs every evening around the
block. Amazing that they can
control the direction of all that
ham with just a little stick.
Good work, girls.
Psalms 104:23 “Then man
goes out to his work, to his la-
bor until evening.”
The Eagle/Angel Carpenter
Santa Claus, aka Francis Kocis, visits the John
Day Senior Center last Thursday for a Christmas
in July celebration with Senior Center director
Veanne Weddle standing by to assist.

Visitors at Thursday’s
John Day Senior Center lun-
cheon were treated to a visit
from a “jolly old elf” for a
Christmas in July celebra-
tion.
Francis Kocis of Canyon
City donned the red suit and
snowy beard for the event.
Santa handed out the
day’s door prizes and award-
ed Linda Stoltz of John Day
with an appreciation award.
Senior program manag-
er Veanne Weddle said the
award was well deserved.
“She does an amazing
job,” Weddle said, not-
ing Stoltz helps decorate
the Senior Center, helps
in the kitchen and library
and seats the guests.
“People don’t realize how
big the hostessing role is,”
Weddle added, and explained
the hostess tries to ill the ta-
bles while also letting people
sit where they’d like.
John Day senior meals are
served at noon on Mondays
and Thursdays.
A special meal will be
served at the Senior Center
during the Grant County Fair
on Thursday, Aug. 11, with
barbecue ribs, potato salad
and birthday cake dessert.
“The center will be deco-
rated with a western theme,
with lots of door prizes that
day,” Weddle said.
The Senior Center is lo-
cated at 142 Dayton St. For
more information, call 541-
575-1825.
