Walkers, runners and bikers
took the opportunity for an up-
close look at a town brimming
with history during Saturday’s
Canyon City Challenge.
While the race was not of-
¿ cially timed, the ¿ rst one to
cross the ¿ nish line was 1ich-
olas Smith of Wisconsin, who
is living in John Day for the
summer.
There were 22 participants
in the event, which organiz-
ers Karen Johnston and Cindy
Lemcke hope becomes an an-
nual tradition.

leg of the race included stops at
St. Thomas Episcopal Church,
Station ’62, Russell’s Custom
Meats, Shell Station and the
Grant County Historical Muse-
um.
The biking portion followed
Highway 395 South through
Canyon Creek a total of 12
miles, and the running part in-
cluded a loop behind the old
schoolhouse on Rebel Hill
Road.
“Everybody came back and
said it was a lot of fun and said
they want to preregister next
year,” Johnston said.

Singles and doubles
held twice a week

Pickleball leagues start next week at the Sev-
enth Street Complex tennis courts in John Day.
A sit session will be held at 6 p.m. Monday,
July 25, with a review of the rules and practice
play.
Games begin on the second night and con-
tinue through August 18.
Doubles leagues play Mondays and
Wednesdays, with singles leagues on Tues-
days and Thursdays.
Registration is $40 per team.
John Day-Canyon City Parks and Recre-
ation of¿ cials say the sport is easy to learn
and is like a combination between table ten-
nis and tennis, with a smaller court.
They said that last year, adults of various
ages signed up, along with some older teens.

es.
Lynda Christensen won the
poker run with three aces.
Johnston said 14 volunteers
helped the event run smoothly.
Disc jockey Jeff Meyerholz
provided energetic music in the
park.
Johnston said she and Lem-
cke had talked about creating
a walking, biking and running
event for several years, adding
they wanted all of it to begin
and end in Canyon City.
“We’ve designed this so
there is something for every
level of participation,” Lemcke
said, adding children in strollers
and dogs on leashes are wel-
come in the hike portion.
Johnston said, “Our hope is
that we earn enough money for
family friendly activities in our
Canyon City Park, and to ex-
pand the park area.”
She added the city is spon-
soring the activity, and an advi-
sory board will be created to di-
rect funds raised from the event.
Johnston and Lemcke hope
to see more people join the race.
1ext year, they plan to make it
an evening event with a barbe-
cue in the park.
“We feel like we have a very
unique city here, and we’re
proud of it,” Johnston said.
“We’re excited to have people
come and enjoy the area.”

The John Day Swim Team had a
big weekend, ¿ nishing second at the
July 15-1 Hi-Desert ,nvitational in
Burns.
“,’m proud of them all,” said head
coach Sabrina Howard.
She said they had their highest
participation level of the season, with
six from the youngest “¿ shies” group
competing.
“Quite a few of them took time,
so that’s huge,” Howard said. “Hav-
ing the youngsters brings a fun aspect
to the meet. The enthusiasm in their
eyes is contagious.”
Lakeview won the meet, with
Burns ¿ nishing third and Prineville
fourth.
Howard said several older athletes
on her team “dominated” in the 400
freestyle event.
“They’re all taking time off their
events,” she said. “,t helps motivate
us for the coming meet. We have
home pool advantage, and we wel-
come everyone to the JDST ,nvita-
tional to gear us up for districts.”
John Day’s invitational is Friday
through Sunday, July 22-24.
