The John Day Swim Team
shored up their talents for fourth
overall at the July 8-10 Lakev-
iew Swim Meet.
Klamath Basin, a year-round
swim team, won fi rst place with
610 points, followed by Lakev-
iew with 461, Prineville 341,
John Day 268 and High Desert
Burns 243.
There were 26 athletes from
the John Day team competing at
the event.
John Day swimmer Taylor
Hunt was the boys 13-14-year-
old high-point swimmer, and
Justin Hodge won the boys 12
and under.
“That’s a huge compliment
to have two of our boys win
it,” said John Day Swim Team
coach Sabrina Howard, adding
the competition was tough.
She said the team performed
well, given the cold weather.

Sivanna Hodge competes at the July 8-10 Lakeview
Swim Meet for the John Day Swim Team.
“I’m so proud of how our
team came together and swam
through it,” she said. “They
maximized each event and
warmed up by kicking hard.
They all swam the best I’ve seen
all season.”
She said the team is now pre-
paring for the Burns Swim Meet
this weekend.
“We’re looking for good
numbers participating this
week,” she said.

Over a dozen youth com-
peted in the Grant County
Junior Golf scramble July 6
and 7 at the John Day Golf
Club.
The event capped the
two-week youth golf camp
led by Ron Lundbom and
Jeff Allen.
Lundbom is head coach
for the Grant Union High
School golf team, and Allen
is assistant coach.
There were 15 boys and
girls ages 7 to 17 taking the
opportunity to learn about
and improve their grip,
stance, posture, ball position
and swing.
Two days were spent
practicing their swing with
both irons and woods.
“They learned the dif-
ferent ways to putt and
how to chip from around
the green,” Lundbom said.
“They learned some eti-
quette of golf, and we went
over the basic rules we en-
counter most of the time we
play.”
Following last week’s
scramble, the group gath-
ered for ice cream at the
clubhouse.
“We talked about having
a junior golf night and the
future kids have in the life-
long game of golf,” he said.
“It was a pleasure having
such a great group of kids
and a special thanks to the
Golf Club and this year’s
golf team for helping make
this happen.”

all stars took a tough
6-5 loss to Parkside/
Beaumont on Monday in the fi -
nals at the Oregon Juniors Little
League State Championships.
The weeklong double-elimi-
nation tournament was hosted by
the Or-Cal District in Tulelake,
California.
Grant County manager Zach
Williams said his team showed
their resiliency in the game after a
21-9 loss to Parkside/Beaumont
the previous day in the semifi nal
games.
“They played really well,” he
said. “They fought hard, kept it
together and they played like a
team.”
Wildfi re’s Shaine Madden
pitched the game for Grant
County.
The Grant County team had
the fi rst run of the game in the top
of the third, and Parkside/Beau-
mont tied the score in the bottom
of the inning.
Wildfi re added a run in the
top of the fourth, and three more
in the seventh. The score was 5-2
going into the bottom of the sev-
enth. Parkside/Beaumont loaded
the bases and scored two on a
single.

The Grant County Wildfire 13-14-15 All-Stars team, on Monday, prepares for
state finals action. The team finished second in the tournament.
“We walked a girl and got a
double play from home to fi rst,”
Williams said.
The score was 5-4 with two
outs, with the Wildfi re in the lead.
“We had a ground ball to third
that was thrown to fi rst, and the
umpire made the determination
that the fi rst baseman’s foot came
off the bag, allowing the tying
run to score,” Williams said.
Parkside/Beaumont, which
had no losses in the tournament,
hit a sacrifi ce pop fl y to give
them the win.
If Grant County had won the
game, they would have faced
Parkside/Beaumont again that
day for a fi nal game.
“They were heartbroken,”
Williams said. “It was a really
hard loss. They’re very resilient.”
Grant County’s centerfi elder
Kaylee Wright, who went 3-4 in
the game, was awarded the dis-
trict administrator’s game ball
as Most Valuable Player of the
championship game.
Williams said he appreciat-
ed the supporters who followed
their livestream videos and those
who traveled to the games.
“I would also like to thank
Mike Strong and Tammy Clark,”
he said. “I couldn’t ask for better
assistant coaches.”

Special Olympians shine at Summer Games
By Angel Carpenter
Blue Mountain Eagle
One moment at the July
9-10 Special Olympics Sum-
mer State Games in Newberg
showed what the event, involv-
ing over 1,000 track and fi eld
athletes, is all about.
Grant County Special
Olympics track and fi eld coach
Karla Colson said during one
of the running events an athlete
fell down.
“Instead of just whizzing
past him, another athlete picked
him up and they both fi nished
last,” Colson said.
The two athletes weren’t
from the Grant County team,
but Colson said it highlights the
spirit of the Summer Games.
“That’s what it’s all about,”
she said. “this is real sports-
manship.”
This year’s Grant County
team included: Caleb Madsen,
Crystal Wimberley, Jay Colson,
Brian McKrola, Katie Shock-
ley, Josiah Hoeffner, Elizabeth
Swarthout, Katie Latham,
Rodney Brunson and Charley
Fronapel. Colson was assist-
ed by co-coach Ashley Wyllie
during the season.
Assistants at the games in-
cluded Grant County Special
Olympics coordinator Deron-
da Lallatin, Michael Snyder
and David Gill.
The local athletes compet-
ed in several events, including
the shot put, softball throw,
4x100-meter relay, 100-meter
walk and 200-meter run.
Josiah Hoeffner placed sec-
ond in the softball throw, and
the relay team, including Jay
Colson, Brian McKrola, Crys-
tal Wimberley and Caleb Mad-
sen, won third place.
“They were very encourag-
ing of their teammates and en-
couraging toward other teams,”
Karla said. “They persevered
and tried their personal best. I
was proud of them all. It was a
beautiful thing.”
She said the athletes also en-
joy other activities at the event,
including dances, as well as
meeting athletes from other cit-
ies. She added it’s special when
family members can make it to
cheer them on in their competi-
tions. Colson said they hope to
offer soccer and swimming in
the fall, and they are seeking a
volunteer with lifeguard certifi -
cation to join them for trips and
swimming activities.
She noted that in order for
athletes to swim during their
motel stays, they have to be
accompanied by a certifi ed life-
guard.
