JOHN DAY — On June
27, we had grilled fish med-
ley with onions and pep-
pers, served with steamed
rice, carrots and zucchini,
broccoli salad and fresh
baked cheddar bay biscuits,
followed by orange delight.
I want to thank Shay for
taking notes for me that day.
There were approximately
30 in-house diners served
by members of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints.
Billie Bullard and Mar-
garet Glass greeted every-
one, while Darlene Nodine
led the flag salute, and Su-
san Sintay asked the bless-
ing. These two gals also
delivered 28 meals and 22
frozen dinners to shut-ins.
Veanne Weddle an-
nounced it was Orange
Blossoms Day, hence the
dessert.
Darlene Nodine won the
Len’s Drug gift certificate,
and Nadine Smith won the
free meal.
On June 30, we had bar-
becued hamburger steaks,
baked potatoes, baked
beans, coleslaw and dinner
rolls, with old fashioned
strawberry shortcake for
dessert. The entree was
furnished by Helen Bogart
in memory of Ken Boga-
rt. We had approximately
60 diners with another 38
meals delivered by Virginia
Miller and Mary Lu Horton,
along with 10 frozen ones
to shut-ins. The Blue Moun-
tain Hospital officer joining
them to serve was Karen
Bailey.
Bonnie Kocis and Mer-
ri Henry greeted us. Karen
led the flag salute, and Ben
Leuthe asked the blessing.
Veanne announced the
Fourth of July celebrations
and Helen Bogart’s 93rd
birthday on July 4. Francis
Kocis won the Chester’s
Thriftway gift certifi cate,
and Everett Swayne won the
Valley View lunch for two.
Thursday, July 7, we will
have beef enchiladas, Span-
ish rice, refried beans, green
salad and birthday cake.
Monday, June 11, we will
have blueberry pancakes,
scrambled eggs and sausage
links.

and there is no other.”

PRAIRIE CITY — Happy
Fourth of July to you! Hope
you all had a festive time
enjoying the 240th anniver-
sary of the founding of our
country. I especially liked the
theme of the Prairie City pa-
rade: Remember why it’s the
4th of July. (Soapbox alert) I
am of the opinion that every
school student should have
to read the entire Declaration
and take a test on it (off the
box now).
We started the celebra-
tion with a picnic lunch on
the Wednesday before the
Fourth. The tables had the
fancy red, white and blue
thinger-dingers that Pam
uses around town. Thanks for
sharing.
Bruce, Buzz and Harold
did their setting of the tables.
Later, Larry and Tom came to
assist Buzz and Ken with the
home deliveries. It certainly
does help to have two rigs to
do that. Everyone gets back
in time for a hot lunch!
So Buzz led the fl ag sa-
lute, and Bob Meador asked
the blessing. We had 74
names on the book. Today
was also June birthday recog-
nition day, and I could only
find one person besides me
that had a June birthday.
So Marlene and I fought it
out, but I prevailed and won
the $10 in trade donated by
Huffman’s Market. The $5 in
trade donated by Prairie Hard-
ware & Gifts went to Jean
Kline, and the 50/50 cash of
$21 went to Chester Willis.
Then Mayor and Coun-
ty Commissioner-elect Jim
Hamsher presented a plaque
to our local building main-
tenance supervisor Jimmy
Lunzman for his good work
in helping to keep our city
looking nice and clean. If Jim-
my sees something that needs
picking up, he just does it. He
received a good round of ap-
plause and cheers.
We also want to give
thanks to the family of the
late Laura Lee Raines. They
donated a generous gift to the
center in her memory.
And the new refrigerator is
here and working! Cool, huh?
PTL for the money and man-
power that made it possible.
Thanks to Harold and Co. for
making it happen.
So we ate little orange to-
matoes, pasta salad, hot dogs
and buns with relish and on-
ions, tater chips and cupcakes
with coconut in them and on
the white frosting. On top
were blueberries and a straw-
berry slice. Then when you
bit down, there was another
strawberry inside! Thanks to
Marnie Mediger for the straw-
berries.
Lorna and Jonie brought
Dorothy Blasing, Lois Hill,
Otho Laurance and Marilyn
Randall from the Blue Moun-
tain Care Center. Want to send
get-well wishes to faithful
volunteer Jim Howard who
had the misfortune to be bitten
by a tick. So be extra careful
out there — in the yard, gar-
den or woods.
Speaking of garden, I
thinned the radishes this morn-
ing and got 12 little red globes
that were big enough to eat.
The grapevine “grapes” ha-
ven’t gotten any bigger, but
the hollyhocks that didn’t
get big enough last year to
bloom are overloaded with
flower buds this year. And
the self-seeded morning
glories better get their act in
gear or they’re gonna miss
out on the climbing and
blooming!
Romans 12:9 “Love must
be sincere. Hate what is
evil; cling to what is good.”

MONUMENT — By the
time you read this, the month
of June will have come and
gone. This past week has
been very busy for me and
my family. The Monument
Bible Fellowship had their
annual VBS program, and
it was awesome. My family
and I volunteered to help so
it was exhausting but well
worth it. We had kids from all
over. They came from Long
Creek, Spray, Kimberly and
Dayville. Everyone had great
fun and learned that they
could have courage to face
anything in life because God
loves them, and will never
leave them or forsake them
and, of course, the wonderful
good news of the Gospel of
Jesus.
Well, I was not in atten-
dance to the senior lunch
because I was busy with the
VBS. I gathered information
from our trusty greeter Mar-
va. I heard that Terry Cade
and Carrie Jewell cooked a
wonderful and delicious meal
of meatloaf, mashed potatoes
and gravy, corn, dinner rolls
and birthday cake. I’m a lit-
tle disappointed I missed this
meal. The greeters were Bob
Blakeslee, Bodean Andersen
and Marva Walker. Bob led
the fl ag salute, and Bodean
made the announcements and
prayed the blessing over the
meal. Dan Clifford won the
Len’s Drug gift card, Doro-
thy Jordon won the Chester’s
Thriftway gift card and the
free meal ticket was won by
Ron Odette. That reminds
me, welcome back Ron! We
had quite a few visitors: Pat
Amling and Nadine Smith
from Mt. Vernon, Pastor Tony
from Heppner, Marilee from
Hermiston and Brantley Hall
from John Day. We had 43
guests on our books and fi ve
take-outs.
So, my little herd of goats
just increased by two a couple
of days ago. Yup, Mama had
twin baby kids. I have de-
cided their names are going
to be Jack and Jill. They are
very cute. We hope to tame
them down so that they will
follow us around and be real-
ly friendly. Baby animals are
defi nitely adorable.
I was fi nally able to plant
some vegetables. I feel a lit-
tle relieved that I got them in
the ground. I even have some
little tomatoes growing on the
plants. I’m looking forward
to the Ronde de Nice squash
I planted. I love the taste
and like to sauté them in the
skillet with just olive oil, salt
and pepper. I get so excited
when I go to water the beds
and see new growth. I actu-
ally get pretty giddy. I think
I will get some straight neck
yellow squash, because I saw
something green popping up
from the dirt. I planted some
basil with my tomatoes. The
basil is supposed to make the
tomatoes taste even better. I
will let you know. I will also
use the basil later when I can
tomato sauce. I’m not done
planting, but I hope to have
everything done by the end
of next week.

soever is born of God over-
cometh the world: and this
is the victory that over-
cometh the world, even our
faith.”
