MARSHALS
GAle & Carl Sheppard
It all began when Carl Lester
Sheppard was born in the
Ontario/Weiser area in May 1946.
At the age of 24 he moved to Prairie
City, married and had two sons, Gene
Sheppard and Darrly-McKenzy
Smith. He began working for the
United States Forest Service on the
road crew and also worked for vari-
ous ranches in Prairie City. He was
also a member of the Grant County
Search and Rescue for several years.
Gale Kathryn Pope was born in
Portland, Oregon in July 1955. She
was raised in Eugene, Oregon. Gale
attended Oregon State University and
majored in Animal Science.
Carl met Gale in 1978 while she
was employed with the BLM in
Juntura through a mutual friend. Gale
moved to Prairie City and started
working for the United States Forest
Service on the timber marking crew
with Carl.
They were married in January
1979. Their first child, Pamela Jane
Sheppard, was born in October of
that year. While Carl stayed working
with the United States Forest Service,
Gale stayed at home and raised their
daughter. Then in June of 1983 their
second child, Ann Kathryn Sheppard,

was born. Gale returned to work for
the United States Forest service.
Gale became involved in the 4-H
program when Pam became a Pre-
4Her. She became a leader in both
the livestock and non-livestock proj-
ects due to the shortage of leaders.
Carl soon became involved as a co-
leader. They both stayed involved
with the program throughout the
years that their girls participated.
Gale stayed on as a leader for a few
more years.
Gale was also a chaperone for the
4-H horse bowl time during the state
competition.
