PRAIRIE CITY — Prairie
City School students and local
veterans gathered on May 19 for
a parade down Front Street in
Prairie City and a presentation
at the lagpole across from City
Hall.
The event, in honor of Armed
Forces Day on May 21, included
songs, the pledge of allegiance
and introductions of each veter-
an, their branch and time served.
The students were then al-
lowed to shake hands with the
veterans and thank them for their
service.

Grant is now a ‘Purple Heart County’
Blue Mountain Eagle
Grant County has be-
come the second in Oregon
to be designated a “Purple
Heart County.”
According to Robert Van
Voorhis, the “Purple Heart”
proclamation, which was
driven by John Day Elks
Lodge No. 1824 and the
Military Order of the Purple
Heart, was passed unani-
mously by the Grant County
Court on May 11.
Van Voorhis said Doug-
las is the only other county
in Oregon thus far “to join
our efforts to honor those
wounded or killed in all the
nations’ conflicts.”
Several towns in Crook
and Deschutes counties,
however, have signed on to

ple Heart designation will be
erected at Grant County en-
trances on highways 26 and
395 and state routes 7 and 19.
Memorial Day will be ob-
served in Prairie City with a
short flag ceremony, gun sa-
lute and prayers, at 11 a.m.
Monday, May 30, in the
Prairie City Cemetery.
The remembrance will
be led by American Legion
Post 106.
Both Prairie City and
Canyon City cemeteries
will be ablaze with the red,
white and blue of large
mounted American flags,
and hundreds of smaller
flags posted at each mili-
tary grave site. The flags
are courtesy of Post 106 in
Prairie City, and Ellis Tracy
Post 77 does the honors at
the Canyon City Cemetery.
The federal holiday re-
members military person-
nel who have died while
serving in U.S. Armed
Forces.
