News County insurance, building reserve pay for ADA-accessible walkways Blue Mountain Eagle JOHN DAY — Getting around at the Grant County Fairgrounds is about to get a whole lot smoother. A 750-foot paved walk- way has been installed, run- ning from the parking area at the Keerins Hall building on Bridge Street all the way through the fairgrounds to the base of the rodeo grand- stands. The new path is ADA-ac- cessible and includes paved offshoots leading to such places as the lagpole area, the Lions Club burger stand, several Trowbridge Pavilion entrances, the Sale Barn and the restrooms. County Judge Scott Myers said some of the LETTERS Continued from Page A4 Not intimidated by reporter To the Editor: Les Zaitz, senior inves- tigative reporter for the Or- egonian/OregonLive, has badgered me several times for an interview, which I have declined. I do not care for his reporting. Being the investigative reporter he is, I received a list of questions (in which) he asked about my involve- ment in the natural resource plan and being a special dep- uty (I’ve been one from the old sheriff’s posse days) and other inquires I would not feel conident in talking to him about. Mr. Zaitz dug back to 1999: “Were you the subject The Eagle/Sean Hart Prairie City resident Hal Gillam, right, pushes asphalt into a paver with other Tidewater Contractors employees Tuesday at the Grant County Fairgrounds. The project will provide an ADA-compliant walkway from Bridge Street to the ramp at the rodeo arena at the fairgrounds. funding came from a $7,500 grant from the county’s insurance com- pany, CIS, with a 25-per- cent match from the coun- ty. Myers said CIS, being a risk management entity, allots the county $5,000 per year for safety items. The balance of the $30,000 project came from the county’s building re- serve. Tidewater Contractors of John Day is in charge of the work. of a criminal investigation for theft from the national forest? Was a search warrant served?” Yes, I told an arro- gant Forest Service cop, if he wanted to snoop around my wood pile, “Get a search warrant.” He did and nothing came of it, for there was no theft. Then, “On Dec. 4, 2012, you were cited for violation of the terms of the condition of a permit, found guilty in federal court and ined $275.” Yep. I did not have my permit with me that day; it was in another truck from the day before when several friends and I loaded irewood. “Did you pay the ine?” No. I did community service in lieu of the ine. “Have you paid your property taxes on time and why not?” Economics and injuries had a lot to do with it. Zaitz ended his query with, “Some people believe that if they don’t answer questions they won’t be part of a report. That’s an incor- rect belief. This is your op- portunity to provide your views, facts and explana- tions.” I take that to imply, if I don’t cooperate, then one’s dirty laundry will be aired. Mr. Reporter, don’t get your panties in a wad, but I’m not intimidated by the sorry methods you employ. Now that is my opinion, and I have the paperwork to back it up. A copy of this will also go to the Oregonian/Or- egonLive.
