News Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, April 20, 2016 A3 QUILTS, QUILTS AND MORE QUILTS GC Piecemakers guild holds 16th annual show By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle JOHN DAY — Diane Da- vis of Mt. Vernon had two quilts among 100 total on dis- play at the 16th annual Grant County Quilt Show. The event, held last Fri- day and Saturday at the Grant County Fairgrounds pavil- ion, featured row after row of quilts in an array of col- ors, styles and unique qual- ities. Davis brought two quilts for the show, including a rich pink entry, titled “Drag- onflies and Fuschias,” and a nine-patch and snow- ball pattern with a western theme. “I like creating,” said Da- vis, who learned to sew and quilt from her grandmother when she was 10 years old. She passed the joy of quilt- ing on to her two now-grown daughters, teaching them when they were 10 and 12. “One of the things I’ve gotten into, because I had breast cancer a few years ago, is to make quilts and donate them,” Davis said. She made a quilt last year for Blue Mountain Hospital, which was raffled off, with the proceeds donated to a program to help breast can- cer patients. Davis also made five quilts to give to people af- fected by the Canyon Creek Complex fire last year. “I hardly keep a quilt,” she said. “I usually give them away.” Several quilters joined a Sunday workshop at the pa- vilion with Dawn Kitzmill- Linda Gingrich of John Day, left, and Diane Higbie of Seneca check out the quilts on display. Local man ights aggressive brain cancer Donations will help with mounting expenses By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle JOHN DAY — Grant County native Curt Pereira is in a ight for his life, under- going radiation therapy after having a highly cancerous glioblastoma brain tumor re- moved. His wife Lisa said they are hoping and praying it goes into remission. While the Pereiras’ focus has turned to this crisis, there are still bills to pay. An ac- count for donations has been set up at U.S. Bank in Curt Pereira’s name, and contribu- tions can be made at any U.S. Bank. A GoFundMe account has raised $1,125 as of Tuesday at GoFundMe.com (search “Curt Pereira”). Updates on Curt’s health, along with well Curt Pereira wishes, are in- cluded at the site. O t h e r fundraisers are in the works, includ- ing a spaghet- ti feed with a dessert auc- tion, Lisa said. Curt is employed at Tide- water, but due to the size of the mass, Curt will be off work for three weeks or lon- ger, she said. “This will risk our house amongst other things,” she said. “Those who know Curt know how quick he is to help anyone and everyone, and I am hoping others will help him in return.” She said each donation will go toward their house payment and medical bills and asked for continued prayers. On March 17, doctors re- moved a 5-centimeter tumor, and now Curt is undergoing daily radiation therapy in Bend for a total of six weeks.
