After a slow start hit- ting, Grant Union’s bats warmed up a bit in the bottom of the fourth in- ning. Young led off the inning with a single. Ty McDaniels’ single ad- vanced Young to second base, and Wyatt Weaver came to the plate and hit an RBI single that scored Young and put Grant Union on the scoreboard. Then in the sixth, Mc- Daniels smashed a dou- ble. Weaver again came to the plate, this time hitting an RBI double, which scored McDaniels and recorded his second RBI of the afternoon. Grant Union’s bats quieted down again after this, and they were un- able to make a comeback. Delaney said that he was pleased with the entire team the first game, es- pecially McDaniels’ great performance at the plate. Grant Union came out a bit flat in the sec- ond game and allowed a nine-run first inning. They played well the rest of the way, though, especially at the plate, where they managed 10 hits. Hayden Young per- formed especially well this game, going 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Moving forward, Del- aney hopes the team can learn to bring the effort and consistency from their better games to all their games. Earlier in the week, the Prospectors also lost two close games to Cul- ver, 9-6 and 17-15. Dayville Dayville athlete Kristina Humphreys fi nished fi rst in javelin at both the Burns and John Day events. She was also third in discus at Burns. For the boys, Bud Farmer earned third in the long jump, and Gabe Walker was fourth in the 110 hurdles. “We had a good meet, and Gabe was notably the only hurdler in his event not to hit a hurdle (in John Day),” said Dayville head coach Peter Bo- gardus. “Gabe was the only athlete who made it to Burns on Saturday, where he PR’d in hur- dles, long jump and the 100M. The weather was perfect.” Grant Union softball vs. Nyssa in John Day (2), 1 p.m. the TRACK Prairie City Prairie City athletes had some shining performances at the Burns event, including Garrett Hitz placing fi rst in pole vault, second in javelin and third in the 110 hurdles. As my first season in pole vault, I’ve made a lot of progress.” Coach’s Comment: “Amaya has been putting in some extra hours on pole vault with coach Joe Hitz. She has a goal of making it to state her senior year. She has a great attitude and works hard. She recently improved from her first pole vault jump ever of 6 feet to 7-6, an 18-inch increase in less than a week.” The Eagle photos/Angel Carpenter LEFT: Prairie City’s Teri Cobb throws shot put at the April 5 Grant Union Small Schools Invitational. As far as this season’s competition, he said, “It’s anybody’s game this year.” He said he appreciates all the golfers’ positive strides. “They’ve got a really good attitude, they like be- ing out here, they improve every week and, hopeful- ly, they peak at the right time,” he said. The sole senior on the team this season is Nathan Gehley. This is Gehley’s fourth year on the team, and last summer he par- ticipated in Down Under Sports, competing on Ore- gon’s team against interna- tional groups in Australia. “Nathan’s really worked hard the last three years,” Lundbom said. “He deserves to make it to the next level.” Gehley said he’s hope- ful about the season, per- sonally and as a team member. “I’m hoping to place in the rest of the tournaments this year, and hopefully our team score is good enough to qualify for state to fi n- ish off my senior year,” he said. “Jay (Goldblatt) has been outstanding his fi rst year golfi ng, Connor (White) is a good addition, too and Duane (Stokes) has really picked it up this year.” The Eagle/Angel Carpenter Grant Union golfer Tiana Allen competes in Friday’s invitational at the John Day Golf Club. showed,” he said. “This is where district will be, and - Head Coach Joe Weymouth Debbie Ausmus 245 South Canyon Blvd. John Day, OR 97845 OPEN WED. & THUR. 9 am - 5 pm 541-575-1113 24 hrs/7 days wk Proud sponsor of Grant County athletes 100 E.
