John Day

W
ith the only stoplight in
Grant County, John Day
is the “big city” with a
population of 1,735.
Centrally located at
the intersection of
highways 26 and 395,
the town features facilities that serve the
surrounding areas, including a hospital and the
county’s fairgrounds and rodeo arena, airport and
industrial park, chamber of commerce and library.
John Day is home to two museums — Kam
Wah Chung and Ranch and Rodeo — and a
spacious senior center.
And residents don’t have to venture far to enjoy
the great outdoors.
John Day City Park at Northwest Canton
Street and Ing-Hay Way has a picnic area,
restrooms and a walking path along the banks of
Canyon Creek in the heart of town. Gleason
Public Pool is nearby.
The Seventh Street Complex at the north side of
town offers a variety of recreational opportunities.
Just west of town, the John Day Golf Course
offers nine holes of putting and driving fun. The
clubhouse has a large banquet room and stunning
views overlooking the course.
Downtown John Day features recently
reconstructed sidewalks and new light fixtures
thanks to the John Day Beautification Project with
additional improvements, such as wider bicycle
lanes, coming soon.

DON’T MISS:
The Seventh Street Complex, which features baseball and softball fields,
basketball and tennis courts, a skate park, a pond, picnic areas, a playground
and a paved mile-long trail. From Highway 26, travel north on Bridge Street
across the John Day River and take a right on Seventh Street.
John Day Farmers’ Market, Saturdays from mid-June to mid-October on
Southwest Brent Street.
Grant County Fair and Rodeo, Aug. 10-13 at the fairgrounds, 411 N.W. Bridge
St., and the Cowkids Rodeo, Aug. 14.
