JOHN DAY — On March
24, we had approximately 80
diners present. There were 28
meals delivered and 20 frozen
dinners went out to shut-ins.
Jim Maple and Joan Vetter de-
livered the meals with the help
of Veanne Weddle. The entrée
was furnished by Tootie Cer-
nazanu in memory of her late
husband, Jim. It consisted of
maple dijon glazed ham, po-
tatoes au gratin, mixed veg-
gies and dinner rolls and for
dessert we had Easter basket
cupcakes.
It was good to see Shay,
our cook, after his surgery.
He is on light duty so he had
some volunteer help in the
kitchen consisting of Dan-
ny DePriest, Linda Stoltz,
Kelly Couran and, of course,
our own Veanne, who is al-
ways helping out. Our assis-
tant cook, Lisa, is currently
in Bend with her husband,
Curt, while he is recuperat-
ing from surgery also.
Margaret Glass and Da-
vid Pasko greeted us while
Billie Bullard sold raffle
tickets.
Our servers were from St.
Elizabeth Catholic Church.
The helpers were Walt and
Agnes Hall, Jim Maple, Joan
Vetter, Jeanne Madesh and
Sharon Smith. Walt led the
flag salute and Jim asked the
blessing.
Veanne announced she
is trying to start a class on
living with chronic condi-
tions. This free class would
meet once a week for about
two hours and last about six
weeks. If she can get enough
people interested, it will
enable her to get access to
about $900 for scholarships
to the Grant County Health
Fair. Those interested can
contact Veanne at 541-575-
2949.
She also announced that
at 11 a.m. on May 19 here at
the center there will be a pre-
sentation on at-risk drivers
presented by the Oregon De-
partment of Transportation.
We had a few guests to-
day: Don Caldwell brought
his son, Dave, and grandson,
Dillon, to lunch with him,
and Judy Nelson had her
grandson, Reuben, with her.
Deda Porter won the raf-
fle for the quilt made and do-
nated by Judy Nelson.
Door prizes went to Don
Caldwell, Margie Parker,
Walt Hall, Balbina Escude-
ro, Pat Moore, Ev Arnett,
Ken Heny, Angela Binchus,
Buzz Harris, Nicky Essex,
Billie Bullard, Jessie Lew-
is, Jan Holt, Helen Bogart,
Geri Pasko, Karen Barrietua,
Gloria Kulis, Dillon Cald-
well, Susan Fowle and Jack
Pickle. Eric Julsrud won the
Chester’s Thriftway gift cer-
tificate, and Don Caldwell
won the free meal for two at
Valley View.
On Thursday, March 31,
we will have an April Fool’s
dinner consisting of meatloaf,
mashed potatoes and who
knows what else.
Monday, April 4, we will
have a Reuben bake with
french fries.
Luke 24:6,7 “He isn’t here!
He has risen from the dead!
Don’t you remember what He
told you back in Galilee, that
the Son of Man must be be-
trayed into the hands of sinful
men and be cruci¿ed and that
He would rise again the third
day?”

MONUMENT — I have
such a wonderful hubby.
While I was away in Port-
land, he took notes for me
at the senior center lunch. I
missed the lunch because I
had to stay an extra day to
see the dentist. I can’t be-
lieve I missed meeting and
seeing you, Rose Coombs!
I was greatly disappointed.
You just had to come on a
day when I wasn’t there,
and I hardly ever miss se-
nior lunch. Sigh. I guess I
shall have to go out to Prai-
rie City’s senior lunch one
of these days.
Our greeters were Bob
Blakeslee, Bodean Anders-
en and Marva Walker. Bob
led the flag salute, and Bo-
dean made the announce-
ments and prayed the bless-
ing over the meal. Thank
you to our cooks, Terry
Cade and Christy How-
ell. The meal served was a
John Wayne casserole, fresh
green salad, bread and pud-
ding for dessert. Apparently
I missed the drama of dog
prints found in the kitchen
and the seed drawing bas-
ket going missing. The bas-
ket has been found, so no
worries. We had Rose and
Darrel Coombs and Frances
and Harold Preston visiting
from Prairie City, and Char-
lotte Anthony from Eugene.
Frances Preston won a free
meal, and Larry Voight
won a Len’s Drug gift card.
There were 47 meals served
and no take-outs.
Well, I achieved what I
needed to get done while I
was in Portland. Got to visit
with my friends, did some
shopping and saw the den-
tist. My friends took us to
eat dim sum (steamed little
Chinese dishes you get to
pick as ladies roll their carts
around people’s tables),
Korean barbecue, Japanese
food, American food, fro-
zen yogurt and my favorite
place to eat was Mongolian
hot pot. Oh the food was
absolutely delicious. We
also got to meet some new
friends while visiting and
shared a meal with them,
too.
I didn’t really enjoy my
visit to the dentist, though.
Turned out that my back
fillings had come out, and
so I had to have two fill-
ings put in and also had my
teeth cleaned. I was squeez-
ing my left hand with my
right hand so hard during
the procedure, that I woke
up the next day and several
days afterward with a very
sore hand. At first I thought
I had slept on it funny or
my fingers got swollen, but
no, I just had a death grip
on it. Did I mention that I
also had to have three No-
vacain shots to numb my
mouth? He gave me two
first and then, a little later,
I said I was starting to get
feeling again so he gave me
a third. He then had to hurry
for fear of the stuff wearing
off again. I’m so glad I had
it taken care of, though. It’s
no fun having to deal with
a toothache way out here in
the boondocks! So if you
have a toothache, be brave
and get it fixed ASAP. If I
could do it, so can you. Ha.
