to be added to their Oregon College Savings
Plan funds through the Ready 2 Learn reading
program, offered at the Grant County Library
in John Day. Children from birth to age 6 can
participate in the free program by signing up for
a Ready 2 Learn card. As they check out library
items and participate in library programs, a small
cash amount is credited to their college savings
plan. They are also eligible for periodic prize

Reba A. Berry, 61, of Mt. Vernon, died March 15 at Blue
Mountain Hospital in John Day. A graveside service was held

ated.
Berry was born Oct. 5, 1954, in John Day to Arther and Edna
(Hammons) Dickens. She attended Mt. Vernon High School.
On June 12, 1970, she married Steven Wayne Berry in Mt.
Vernon. She was a childcare provider, cook, assisted in transport-
ing patients and worked with exchange students, in addition to
raising their two sons.
She enjoyed crafting, camping, raising animals and spending
time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Bap-
tist church.
Survivors include her husband, Steven Berry of Mt. Vernon;
sons, Todd Berry of John Day and Richie Berry of Prineville;
granddaughters, Jessica Williams of Prairie City, Henley Berry of
Prineville and Amanda Berry of Portland; brothers, Elmer (Jan)
Dickens of Mt. Vernon, Wayne (Marilyn Raymond) Dickens of
Mt. Vernon and Ted Dickens of Mt. Vernon; sisters, Carolyn (Jim)
Lenz of Boise, Idaho, Barbara (Larry) Palmer of Mt. Vernon and
Linda (Lyle) McCumber of Mt. Vernon; two great-grandchildren;
and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arther and Edna
Dickens; sister, Helen Marie; and grandson, Boone Berry.

Francis “Elmo” Calkins, 82, of John
Day, died March 17 in Prairie City. His
ashes will be spread in his forest at a
later date when family can be present.
Calkins was born Aug. 10, 1933, in
New Mexico, to Golden R. Calkins and
Gertrude C. Bell.
He lived in a railroad boxcar at a
young age, and left home early for
work.
He attended Atascadero Middle and
High schools in Atascadero, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army
and was honorably discharged on April 10, 1952.
He attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and San
Jose College in San Jose, Calif.
In 1976, he discovered John Day during a family vacation,
and moved his family to the area in 1979, when he began work-
ing for the U.S. Forest Service as a transfer from California.
He worked for the U.S. Forest Service as chief of surveying
on the Malheur National Forest. He was also a railroad switch-

He married in 1969 in Atascadero.
He was an outdoorsman whose interests included hunting
DQG¿VKLQJDQGORFDOERZOLQJOHDJXHV+HZDVDPHPEHURIWKH
Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.
Survivors include his sons, Joe W. Calkins and David R.
Calkins, both of Dallas; adoptive son, Phil Calkins of Arroyo
Grande, Calif.; stepson, Steve Anderson of Portland; and friend/
companion, Jennie Roller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Ann Calkins.

Mary Lucinda (Masterson) Burke
July 3, 1935 — March 13, 2016
Mary Lou Masterson Burke, 80,
died March 13 in John Day. A funeral
service was held March 18 at Ellens-
burg Presbyterian Church, with inter-
ment at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Burke was born July 3, 1935, in El-
lensburg, Wash., to Bat and Mary (Mc-
Clure) Masterson. She grew up in the
Teanaway Valley on the historic Mas-
terson Ranch, homesteaded in 1880 by
her great grandfather.
After graduating from Cle Elum
High School, she attended Central Washington College of Ed-
ucation and Washington State University, majoring in English
and education.
On Sept. 20, 1956, she married Pat Burke in Lewiston, Ida-
ho. Together they raised their family and ranched in the Swauk
area until moving to Fox in 2006.
She lived and worked on her family’s cattle ranches all of
her life. She was a good hand and partner to her husband during
nearly 60 years of marriage.
She was well-known in the cattle industry for her work at the
local, state and national levels. She was president of the Kittitas
County Cattle Women, the Kittitas County Cattlemen and the
Washington State Cattlemen’s Association. She also served on
many committees of the National Cattlemen’s Association and
the Kittitas County boards of Conservation and Equalization.
She was recognized as an expert on water rights, writing tes-
timony on proposed water rules and helping many with their
water and property rights.
Survivors include her husband Pat Burke, of Fox; sons, Joe
(Micki) Burke, of Fox, and James “Jed” Burke, of Ellensburg;
sister-in-law, Kathleen Masterson, of Cle Elum, Wash.; neph-
ews, Bob (Patty) Burke and Tom (Carol) Burke of Ellensburg;
nieces, Charlotte (the late Don) Frye, Paula (Wes) Crinklaw and
Patti (Brad Tacher) Burke, all of Ellensburg; niece Laura Me-
gan Masterson, of Cle Elum; and numerous great-nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Harry Masterson,
and eldest son, John Burke.

Margaret Teague
Margaret Teague, 86, died March 15 at her Burns home.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Ruel Teague of
Burns; and children, Peggy Asmussen of Burns, Patsy Olson of
Hayden, Idaho, Paula Cook of Burns and Pete Teague of John
Day.

Esther Hansen
Sept. 29, 1918 — March 16, 2016
GRESHAM — Esther Hansen, 97, formerly of Grant
County, died March 16 in Gresham. At her request, there will
be no service.
Hansen was born Sept. 29, 1918, in Pendleton, to John and
Hilda Molstron. She attended school in Helix, and earned a
teaching degree at Eastern Oregon College.
She taught in the Fox and Seneca school districts. She be-
longed to the Seneca Rope Jumpers and traveled with them to
Chicago and Washington, D.C., as a chaperone.
In 1940, in Spokane, Wash., she married George Hansen,
whom she met at a dance in Long Creek. He was Grant County
commissioner for eight years.
She always said she was involved with ranching most of
her life — growing up on a wheat ranch, living on a cattle
and hay ranch in the Bear Valley area and later operating a
tree farm, after she and her husband retired and moved to Mt.
Vernon.
She was a member of First Christian Church and belonged
to Eastern Star in John Day. She helped with Rainbow girls as
her daughter moved through the chairs. In her early years, she
was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Pendleton where
VKHUHFHLYHGKHUFRQ¿UPDWLRQ,QWKH*UHVKDPDUHDVKHZDVD
member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Georgene, son-in-law,
Dick, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in
2003.

Dollina Mary Ann Humphreys
Dollina Mary Ann Humphreys, 89, of Canyon City, died
March 21 at Blue Mountain Care Center in Prairie City. A fu-
neral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 28, at Driskill
Memorial Chapel in John Day.
