JOHN DAY — On
Feb. 1, we had a lunch of
baked Spanish omelet with
sour cream and salsa, hash
brown patties, banana bread
and fresh oranges. There
were approximately 28 din-
ers present. There were 20
outside meals delivered plus
35 frozen ones went out to
shut-ins.
Marianne Morris and
Merrie Henry greeted us.
Our servers were Virginia
Miller and Mary Lou Hor-
ton from Blue Mountain
Hospital Auxiliary. These
two ladies also delivered
the meals with the help of
Veanne Weddle.
Virginia led the flag sa-
lute, and Ben Luethe asked
the blessing. Also, thank
you to Vicki Harrison who
rolled silverware. I really
appreciate everyone pitch-
ing in to do that job. It is
really helpful to have it all
done ahead of time.
Veanne announced the
drawing for the quilt will be
Thursday, March 24, at the
Easter dinner. Jan Ellison
won the Len’s Drug gift cer-
tificate and Ben Luethe won
the free meal.
Feb. 4 was our Mardi
Gras luncheon. It consist-
ed of gumbo soup, tropi-
cal fruit glazed pork, ov-
en-baked sweet potatoes,
Riviera-blend veggies, din-
ner rolls and, for dessert,
birthday cake. The entrée
was furnished by Grandkids
Inheritance, and the birth-
day cake was furnished by
Driskill Memorial Chapel
and Blue Mountain Hos-
pice. Thank you, folks; we
couldn’t do it without you.
Ron Dowse and David
Pasko greeted us. Our serv-
ers were from the John Day
Church of the Nazarene.
There were 22 meals
plus four frozen ones de-
livered by Joel and Joan
Tayles, Dale Stennett and
Gene Leigh, with the help
of Veanne.
Gene Freshour led the
flag salute, and Dale Sten-
nett asked the blessing.
Serving the meal were Tra-
cie Andrews, Edie and Kurt
Komning, Gene and Jeanne
Freshour, Jessie Lewis and
Bob Lee.
Veanne announced that
Tracie Andrews has mis-
placed her day planner. If
anyone has found it or ac-
cidentally picked it up here
at the Center, please contact
Tracie or Veanne. Veanne’s
number is 541-575-2949.
A big thank you to Linda
Stoltz for handing out beads
to all the women and gold
coins to all the men for our
Mardi Gras day. It was Edie
Komning’s birthday.
Gene Essex won the
Chester’s Thriftway gift cer-
tificate, and Nancy Swayne
won the Valley View lunch
for two. Nancy Elliott, Ken
Henry, Nicky Essex and
Helen Bogart won the extra
door prizes.
Thursday, Feb. 11, will
be our Valentine’s dinner
which will be chicken scam-
pi, rice pilaf and a special
dessert. Monday, Feb. 15,
it will be hot turkey sand-
wiches.

I was the announcer due to
the resignation of “Chairman”

well in the future.

with nice capped ball-point

and phone number on them.
Who? When? Why? Not a
clue. So they were placed on
the registration desk, and at
the end of the day the can was
only half full. Goody, goody.
Our volunteer servers in-
cluded Carla Wright, Mar-
jean Koser, Fran Bunch and
Ginger Kendall. Harold
passed out the desserts.
It was good to see the
Labharts here again. Both
Chris and Kris. I still think it is
amazing that two people with
the same name would get mar-
ried. Lorna and Kellyn brought
Dorothy Blasing, Dollina Hum-
phreys, Lois Hill and Marilyn
Randall from Blue Mountain
Care Center.
Wednesday, Feb. 10, will be
our Valentine’s Day dinner. You
should come if for no other rea-
son than to see the special nap-
kins that will be at each place
setting. We thank Prairie Hard-
ware & Gifts for this donation,
too.
If you come early, around
10:30 a.m., you will be able to
hear the Grant County Jammers
doing their thing. They get to-
gether every week, so this will
be a special treat for them and
us. You may ask “What is a
jammer?” A jammer is a musi-
cian who participates in a “jam
session.” A jam session is when
musicians get together and just
play whatever each one of them
wants to play. It is not a sched-
uled, choreographed perfor-
mance like a concert. That is one
way to play your instrument and
not think of it as “practice” or
“rehearsing.” You are just play-
ing for fun. Love it. Years ago
(ahem), that’s what my dad’s
family always did when they
got together after any holiday
meal. Helps you to be ready to
play on a moment’s notice when
there is no time for any practice
or rehearsal. And remember, if
you have an instrument that isn’t
being used, you may donate it to
the Juniper Arts Council, which
will loan it to someone who
needs an instrument. You get a
tax deduction, and the person
gets an instrument. Win, win.
