JOHN DAY — Monday,
Jan. 25, we had a small-
er crowd than usual. There
were only approximately
24 diners at the center. Our
lunch was sausage diablo,
rice, mixed veggies, whole
wheat rolls, and for dessert,
banana cake. It was a very
good meal, sorry the rest of
you missed it.
Darlene Nodine and Ine-
ta Carpenter delivered 19
meals plus 24 frozen ones
to shut-ins. Veanne Weddle
helped with the Mt. Vernon
route.
Darlene and Ineta repre-
sented the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints,
and they were also our serv-
ers. They also rolled some
silverware in their spare
time. Thanks, ladies.
Darlene led the flag sa-
lute, and Ineta asked the
blessing.
Jim Spell, from the Red
Cross, talked a little on
emergency preparedness in
case of flood.
He also handed out some
literature and urged every-
one to attend the Red Cross
fair on Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. at
the LDS Church.
The Red Cross is also
asking for volunteers to
help fill sand bags to have
on hand.
Veanne announced that
there is a fax virus going
around so be careful on your
computers.
Dale Stennett won the
Len’s Drug certificate, and
Merrie Henry won the free
meal.
Thursday, Jan. 28, we
had beef stroganoff with
noodles, steamed broccoli,
green salad, biscuits, and
for dessert, we had lemon
bars.
There were approximate-
ly 64 diners plus 26 deliv-
ered. The entree was fur-
nished by United Methodist
Church Thrift Shop.
David Pasko and Mar-
garet Glass greeted us, and
Susan Fowle sold raffle
tickets.
David Turner, Jimmy
Maple and Veanne delivered
the meals. Members of St.
Elizabeth Catholic Church
were our servers.
Representing the church
were David Turner, Jimmy
Maple, Joan Vetter and Walt
and Agnes Hall.
Walt led the flag salute,
and Jimmy asked the bless-
ing.
Be sure and make res-
ervations for the Valen-
tine’s dinner on Feb. 11. It
should be a pretty special
meal.
There will also be extra
door prizes so don’t miss
out.
Billie Bullard won the
Chester’s Thriftway gift
certificate, and Wilbur Ash-
by won the meal for two at
Valley View.
On Thursday, Feb. 4,
we will have tropical pork,
sweet potatoes and gumbo
soup.
On Monday, Feb. 8, it
will be Asian green salad,
shrimp fried rice and for-
tune cookies.

MONUMENT — Just
this past Sunday, I was lit-
erally chilled to the bone! I
don’t know if it was be-
cause it was windy or that
there was just a lot of mois-
ture in the air, but I was
COLD. Went to church,
had lunch and then had
to get under a blanket to
warm up and have a nice
siesta — a nap in case you
didn’t know the Spanish
term.
The snow is finally melt-
ing up here on our moun-
tain. There are still parts
where I would venture to
say that there is at least a
foot of hard ice.
We’ve had some beau-
tiful blue skies, some rain
and a light dusting of snow.
I just love it out here. It’s
nice to breathe in fresh air
and not smog.
We lived in a suburb of
L.A. when we lived in Cal-
ifornia. In the next town
over, there were dairy
farms, so there were cows
grazing in the rolling hills.
The cows stunk for
some reason over there
even though it was in the
wide open. Here, I re-
ally can’t smell them. I
always did like seeing
cows, just such a peaceful
sight.
We had a most delightful
lunch prepared by our il-
lustrious chefs, Terry Cade,
Carrie Jewell and Sahara
Derdowitch.
They made roast beef
with gravy, green beans,
roasted potatoes (donated
by the FFA of Grant Union
High School), a beautiful
and fresh green salad and
peach cooler cake.
Our greeters were Bob
Blakeslee and Marva Walk-
er. Bob led the flag salute,
and Marva made the an-
nouncements. Yours truly
prayed the blessing over
our meal. Dan Clifford
won the Len’s Drug gift
card. Bruce Kramer and
Larry Voight both won a free
meal.
The 4-H of Monument
are selling citrus fruits;
please contact Sahara to
place orders.
I cannot believe the
month of January has come
and gone. It was here,
and then in a flash, it was
gone. Before we know it,
spring will be here.
I am getting so excit-
ed. There is so much to
do! I plan on doing lots of
new veggies for my garden
this year.
Every year that we
have been here, the weath-
er patterns were so dif-
ferent from one to the
other.
The winters were differ-
ent, the summers were dif-
ferent and even the spring
and fall. It kind of keeps us
on our toes a bit as to what
to plant in our garden.
I am planting this time
with chicken wire on the
bottom of planter beds and
also planning on planting
the garden near my cats.
You know, to kill
any gophers that try
and eat all my hard
work.
Ephesians 3:13 “Where-
fore I desire that ye Faint
not at my tribulations
for you, which is your
glory.”
Day supper will be here next
Tuesday. She enumerated the
menu, and I started getting
hungry!
