JOHN DAY — The Grant
Union girls basketball team is
on a roll with four wins in a row,
including a 45-23 victory over
the Imbler Panthers last Friday.
Shooting was slow in the
beginning for the Lady Prospec-
tors as they ended the ¿ rst Tuar-
ter 11-10.
Grant Union picked up the
pace in the second, outscoring
their opponents 10-6.
Prospectors Kori Pentzer
and Heather Mosley contribut-
ed points at the free-throw line,
each hitting 2-2.
After the halftime break,
the Prospectors kicked up their
defense, holding Imbler to two
points in the period.
Heather Mosley, À ying up to
score, took a spill and was out
with an injury for the remainder
of the game.
The Prospectors kept their
pace up, and when Imbler stole
the ball, Jozie Rude was on top
of it, nabbing the rebound. She
scored off an assist from Kori
Pentzer.
Grant Union was 20 ahead
going into the fourth, 38-18, and
kept the lead to take the win.
Coach Mosley said the team
was missing easy shots in the
¿ rst half but showed improve-
ment in the second half.
“Defensively, we still did a
good job, and anytime we hold
a team like that to 23 points is
good,” Mosley said. “I consider
Imbler and Enterprise danger-
ous teams, so to come out and
get the win was very good.”
Grant Union went on to beat
Cove 52-37 on Saturday.
The Prospectors travel for a
4 p.m. game at Enterprise next
Saturday, then prepare to face
Burns on the road Jan. 29 and
Union at home Jan. 30.

PRAIRIE CITY — The Lady
Panthers fought illness last week,
but still came up with a 34-20 vic-
tory over Burnt River Saturday
after a 34-62 loss to Adrian the
previous day.
Facing the Adrian Antelopes,
Prairie City stayed strong despite
missing three players.
“We went to Adrian shorthand-
ed,” said head coach Penny Black.
Sarah Ennis took the reins,
leading the Panthers into battle.
“Sarah did an outstanding
job holding the team together in
a hard-fought game against the
Lady Lopes, who had 20 seated on
their bench,” Black said.

JOHN DAY — The Grant Union
Prospectors knocked the Imbler Pan-
thers out of the top spot for 2A teams
Friday with a 55-53 win.
Grant Union knew Imbler was
entering the game 12-0, ranked No.
1 for OSAA and the Oregon Coach-
es’ Poll. Still, Prospector head coach
Steve Speth knew his boys had a
¿ ghting chance.
“I feel we were battle tested,” he
said. “We played a tougher schedule
than they did, and we felt that would
help us down the stretch.”
Grant Union Prospector fans celebrate a three-point score
made by Ricky Weickum in the second quarter against Imbler.

the state, said head coach Andy Lusco.
Giving exceptional performances
were Chance Ballou (285) 5-0, Anto-
nio Dancer (138) 5-0 and Clay John-
son (132) 4-1.
Lusco said he’s especially pleased
this year’s team ¿ lls out 13 weight
classes.
“That’s a huge advantage for a 2A
team,” he said. “We have the right kids
in the right spot.”
Last year, Johnson won third at state,
and four of his teammates ¿ nished third
at the district level, including Chance
Ballou, Dillon Maley, Andrew Copen-
haver and Antonio Dancer. The top
two ¿ nishers in each class at the district
competition continue to state.
