Canyon Creek Complex Fire Salvage Project
Notice of 20-Day Scoping Period
The Malheur National Forest is soliciting comments for a
20-day scoping period on the Canyon Creek Complex Fire
Salvage Project. The objectives of this project are to recover
the economic value of dead trees and to provide for societal
needs for wood products, while allowing research to quanti-
fy the range of conditions necessary to maintain ecological
PU[LNYP[`VMWVZ[ÄYLOHIP[H[ZMVY^VVKWLJRLYZWLJPLZ;OL
recovery of the economic value of dead trees is intended to
provide revenue for road improvements, reforestation, and
watershed and riparian restoration depending on the value
and quantities recovered. Additionally, monitoring of wood-
pecker population relationships with planned treatments will
provide critical information necessary for forest managers
[VVɈLYZVJPVLJVUVTPJILULÄ[Z^OPSLTHPU[HPUPUNOHIP[H[
for key woodpecker species of conservation concern, i.e.,
black-backed, white-headed, and Lewis’s woodpeckers.
The Canyon Creek Complex Fire Salvage project plan-
ning area is located on the Blue Mountain Ranger District,
approximately 8 miles south of John Day, Oregon and
encompasses approximately 53,500 acres of National Forest
System lands in the East Fork Canyon Creek, Upper Canyon
Creek, and Middle Canyon Creek subwatersheds. The legal
description for the project planning area is: Township 14S,
Range 31E, Sections 32-36; Township 14S, Range 32E, Sec-
tions 25-27 and 33-36; Township 14S, Range 33E, Sections
31-32; Township 15S, Range 31E, Sections 1-17, 20-27,
and 36; Township 15S, Range 32E, Sections 1-36; Township
15S, Range 33E, Sections 3-11, 14-23, and 26-34; Township
16S, Range 32E, Sections 1-6 and 9-14; and Township 16S,
Range 33E, Sections 3-7, Willamette Meridian.
The proposal is to salvage within six treatment/study units,
approximately 600 to 700 acres in size. Approximately 50
percent or greater of each treatment/study unit would be
salvaged using varying salvage prescriptions. Additionally,
two unlogged units of similar size, topography, and tree
composition as the treatment units will be utilized as control
units for monitoring. No salvage logging would occur within
the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness which comprises ap-
proximately 20,100 acres of the project planning area.
A more detailed project proposal package for each proposal
can be obtained from Malheur National Forest by contacting
Randy Kyes at 541-575-3058 or at rkyes@fs.fed.us or on
the web at http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/malheur/land-
management/projects. Your comments can help us design
a better project, make us aware of issues we do not know
about, and in general, help us do a better job of planning.
