PRAIRIE CITY – At its
Oct. 14 meeting, the Prai-
rie City City Council voted
to opt out of allowing early
marijuana sales within the
city limits.
The voting break down
was four councilors in favor,
two against and one abstain-
ing.
The council held a town
hall on Sept. 9 to allow the
community to voice their
opinions on the issue. A ma-
jority of those attending signi-

were in favor of opting out.
Prairie City still has the
choice to opt back in later af-
ter seeing what happens in
other towns.
Dayville School and Grant Union Ju-
nior-Senior High School went into lock-
downs the morning of Oct. 22 because of
reports from students about another stu-
dent who allegedly made threats against
Dayville School.
The lockdowns lasted about 45 min-
utes. While the threat was not directed
to an individual student, Dayville School
District Superintendent Kathryn Hed-
rick said, the school immediately made
a report to Grant County Sheriff Glenn
Palmer.
Dayville School was secured and all
teachers were made vigilant, she said.
Sheriff Palmer relayed the potential
of a threat to Grant Union Junior-High
School and the City of John Day.
Hedrick said the school ascertained
the whereabouts of the student, who was
with parents.
The report of a threat was taken very
seriously by the local schools. Grant
Union Junior-High School went into a
modified lockdown.
“As a result of information obtained
from Sheriff Palmer regarding the pos-
sibility of a potential threat to the build-
ing, we erred on the side of caution and
went into a modified lockdown to secure
the building,” Grant Union Junior-Se-
nior High School Principal Ryan Gerry
said.
Hedrick commends the students who
made the original report.
Their willingness to step forward is
what will keep all students safe, she said.
Dayville School will continue to sup-
port the investigation to ensure the safe-
ty of all students and staff.
